BMW X5

2026-10-04 18:40:00

Model Overview

The BMW X5 is the flagship executive luxury SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) in the BMW line-up. Since the arrival of the first-generation model (E53) in 1999, it has evolved into its fourth generation (G05) with millions of units sold globally, firmly establishing itself as the benchmark in the luxury executive SUV segment. In China, BMW Brilliance produces the long-wheelbase (LWB) variant (G18), alongside the fully imported standard-wheelbase (SWB) version. On 20 November 2025, the updated BMW X5 was officially launched in 3 distinct variants, priced between RM598,000 and RM748,000. As a key model-year update, the entire range now receives the M Sport Shadowline Package, Driving Assistant Professional, and front seat ventilation as standard kit—features that were previously reserved only for higher-spec variants. Key segment rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7.

Design Language

The 2026 BMW X5 retains BMW's athletic DNA while receiving comprehensive blacked-out styling enhancements. The front fascia features the signature active kidney grille, which boasts larger dimensions for a more commanding road presence. This is paired with redesigned LED angel-eye headlights, while top-tier variants gain Adaptive Laser Headlights. The front bumper is finished with a sporty front lip and honeycomb lower air intakes, optimising aerodynamic efficiency while delivering an aggressive stance.

In profile, the locally assembled LWB version measures 5,060 mm in length, 2,004 mm in width, and 1,776 mm in height, with a wheelbase stretching to 3,105 mm. Compared to the imported SWB version (3,035 mm wheelbase), the 70 mm stretch goes entirely towards expanding rear-seat legroom. A sharp, continuous shoulder line runs seamlessly from the front wings to the tail lamps. Gloss black finishes on the front fender vents, window surrounds, and roof rails, combined with body-coloured side skirt extensions, further elevate its premium aesthetic. Round the back, 3D sculpted LED tail lamps draw cues from the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, while dual exhaust exits and a gloss black rear apron underscore its sporty intent.

Inside, the 2026 BMW X5 retains BMW’s driver-centric luxury cabin layout, offered in various interior trims such as Volcano Red and Black. The dashboard is headlined by the BMW Curved Display, integrating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display powered by BMW Operating System 9 (iDrive 9) . The seats are also wrapped in upgraded premium leather upholstery.

Performance and Powertrain

The 2026 BMW X5 comes standard with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system across the range, offering a choice between 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines. Both mills are paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Detailed powertrain outputs are as follows:

  • xDrive30Li (2.0T): Maximum power of 190 kW (258 PS) and 400 Nm of peak torque.

  • xDrive40Li (3.0T inline-6): Maximum power of 280 kW (381 PS) and 520 Nm of peak torque.

The 48V mild-hybrid system delivers supplementary electric torque upon setting off, significantly smoothing out auto start-stop operations and improving fuel efficiency. In June 2026, technical details for the next-generation BMW X5 (fifth generation, codenamed G65) were disclosed: the pure petrol 40 xDrive variant will feature an updated B58 3.0T inline-6 engine with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) mild-hybrid setup, bumping outputs to 399 PS and 540 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.3 seconds.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

Under the skin, the 2026 BMW X5 rides on a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. High-spec models feature air suspension with adaptive dampers, tuned with a comfort bias to effectively iron out road undulations. Top-tier variants also come equipped with M Sport brakes, boasting blue calipers and enlarged discs. Despite the extended wheelbase on the LWB version, BMW’s chassis expertise ensures an impeccable balance between sharp handling and supple ride comfort.

The next-generation X5 is set for a massive chassis overhaul: it will adopt the "Heart of Joy" high-performance central control unit derived from the Neue Klasse platform, integrating powertrain, braking, steering, charging, and regenerative braking management with processing speeds ten times faster than before. A 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and adaptive suspension will come standard across the range, with dual-axle air suspension and massive 23-inch alloy wheels available as options.

Cabin and Features

The 2026 BMW X5 receives a substantial equipment upgrade throughout the cabin. Ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system are now standard fitment across all variants. For the higher trims, the xDrive40Li Exclusive M Sport Shadowline Package is upgraded with 22-inch wheels and carbon-fibre interior trim pieces, while the xDrive40Li M Sport Shadowline Package rides on 21-inch wheels with M Sport brakes as standard.

On the practical front, the expansive 3,105 mm wheelbase delivers generous rear-seat legroom. The boot offers a base cargo capacity of 650 litres—easily swallowing four 28-inch suitcases—and expands up to 1,870 litres with the rear bench folded down.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) form the cornerstone of the 2026 BMW X5's updates. Driving Assistant Professional is now standard across the range, having been made standard equipment across all X5 production models starting January 2026. The suite includes Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Parking Assistant. Additional aids include a 360-degree surround-view camera along with front and rear parking sensors. Passive safety is well-covered with front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags.

Market Performance and Verdict

The BMW X5 continues to command a strong market presence in China. As of April 2025, cumulative sales of the locally assembled LWB X5 crossed the 250,000-unit mark. In December 2025 alone, BMW Brilliance delivered 8,659 units of the X5. However, full-year sales for 2025 closed at 70,305 units, marking a year-on-year contraction of nearly 20%. In response, the 2026 model adopts an aggressive "more kit for less money" strategy, lowering the entry price to RM598,000 and offering previously optional premium equipment as standard across the board to sharpen its competitive edge. Meanwhile, the fifth-generation BMW X5 (G65) is gearing up for its global debut, set to make history as BMW's first production model available across five distinct powertrain options: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fully electric (BEV), and hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV). The long-wheelbase derivative (G78) is slated for an official reveal in Q4 2026, with customer deliveries kicking off in Q1 2027. As the pioneer and segment benchmark, the BMW X5 is defending its turf with a high-value spec realignment today, while readying a multi-powertrain offensive for the future.
