BAIC X55 II (known as BAIC Magic Cube in the Chinese market) is a youthful front-engine, front-drive compact SUV developed by BAIC Motor, based on the BMFA (Beijing Modular Functional Architecture) platform. As the flagship product of BAIC's next-generation passenger vehicle expansion overseas, this series focuses on digital technology in the Chinese market, while serving as a core strategic model to explore the mid-to-high-end compact SUV sub-market overseas.

Vehicle Overview

The BAIC X55 II is positioned as an urban compact sports SUV. In the architectural transformation of BAIC passenger cars, this series has been given the historical tags of 'the first fuel-powered SUV to be equipped with Huawei screens and ecosystems (China domestic version)' and 'a globally premium right-hand/left-hand dual-track complementary model'. Its core selling points focus on the boundary-less matrix front grille, esports-style digital cockpit, electronic outside mirrors (optional), and power parameters that stand out at the same price point. This series is mainly targeted at urban young generations, tech enthusiasts pursuing high-level technology configurations, and international consumers expecting to replace traditional Japanese and Korean compact crossovers.

Development History

The birth of the BAIC X55 II is a transformation milestone for BAIC to break free from the design shackles of traditional fuel vehicles and fully embrace digital intelligence. Its first-generation model can be traced back to the early Senova X55. In July 2022, as the second-generation series that underwent a complete replacement and reconstruction, the new car officially launched in the Chinese market under the name BAIC Magic Cube, triggering industry attention with its tech appearance that closely resembles a pure electric vehicle.

Starting from November 2022, the series rapidly launched its global export process, landing in the South African market under the name BAIC X55, and won the South African Annual Compact Family Car Award. From 2024 to early 2026, with the completion of the development of right-hand drive and compliant versions, the overseas expansion of the BAIC X55 II ushered in explosive growth. The series has not only fully penetrated emerging economies such as the Middle East, South America, Southeast Asia (such as Malaysia, Philippines), but also served as a pioneer for the brand to develop developed country markets, officially landing in overseas high-barrier markets such as New Zealand and Australia in the first quarter of 2026, completing the evolution from a single domestic model to a global mass-produced series.

Market Performance

The BAIC X55 II shows a sales characteristic of blooming globally. In the Chinese market, constrained by price squeezing from pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, its pure fuel version's market share is mainly concentrated in specific personalized lower-tier markets. However, in the overall overseas export market, X55 II has already grown into one of the sales pillars of BAIC International. As of 2026 industry terminal feedback, the series' price band in overseas markets (such as New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, etc.) cuts into the most competitive local range of 30,000 to 40,000 US dollars (or approximately 15 million to 17 million Sri Lankan Rupees). Relying on the 5-star C-NCAP safety rating, class-leading smart configurations, and highly textured dynamic performance, it has become the volume representative of premium Chinese-style SUVs in multiple regional markets.

Core Technology

Regarding body dimensions, the BAIC X55 II adopts a sporty outline with high space utilization, with its length, width, and height being 4620 mm, 1886 mm, 1680 mm respectively, wheelbase is 2735 mm, curb weight is 1550 kg, and trunk conventional volume is 350 L.

At the level of core powertrain and three-electric control:

Magic Core Power Engine: All series equipped with BAIC's self-developed Magic Core 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine (code A156T2H). This engine integrates VGT variable geometry turbocharging, 350 bar high-pressure overhead direct injection, and cylinder block/cylinder head independent flow cooling technology. Maximum power output is 138 kW (approximately 188 horsepower), capable of stably outputting 305 Nm of peak torque within a wide rpm range of 1500 to 4500 rpm.

Transmission and Energy Consumption: Matching 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), official top speed is 200 km/h, integrated fuel consumption per 100 km controlled between 7.1L to 7.4L.

Chassis Architecture: Adopting front-engine, front-wheel drive (FF) layout, structure is front MacPherson independent suspension, rear multi-link independent suspension. Vehicle ground clearance with full load is 160 mm.

At the intelligent digital and safety levels, overseas high-spec models (such as Luxury / Honor specifications) are standardly equipped with 10-inch full LCD instrument cluster and 10-inch (or 14.6-inch) central control screen, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The vehicle is equipped with hidden induction door handles, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree panoramic image plus transparent chassis, and integrates Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) including full-speed adaptive cruise control (ACC), automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assist (LKA), and blind spot detection (BSD).

Future Plans

With the deepening of BAIC's global Armstrong channel network, the BAIC X55 II will continue to maintain its main overseas status in the next two to three years. The core of the product's future plans lies in 'Powertrain Electrification' and 'Intelligent Driving Regionalization'. BAIC plans to introduce Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) power stacks for its overseas specifications on the basis of maintaining the rigidity of the existing BMFA architecture, to cope with the upgrade of global carbon emission access standards with low energy consumption solutions. At the same time, the intelligent voice and vehicle infotainment system of the overseas version will carry out deep customization for multiple local languages to ensure its comprehensive competitiveness in the global market.
