Audi RS4

2026-10-11 00:10:00

The Audi RS4 Avant is a high-performance estate developed by Audi Sport GmbH based on the A4 Avant, standing as one of the most iconic "performance wagons" in the Audi RS stable. The RS4 lineage dates back to 2000, with the first-generation model (B5) powered by a 2.7-litre bi-turbo V6 engine, marking the dawn of Audi's high-performance estate lineup. Over the past 25 years, it has evolved through four generations: B7 (4.2L V8), B8 (4.2L V8), and B9 (2.9T twin-turbo V6). The 2026 RS4 Avant currently on sale in China is brought in via Audi (Import).

Model Overview

The RS4 Avant is positioned as a high-performance D-segment estate ("performance wagon"), with its key appeal lying in the seamless harmony between track-ready performance and everyday practicality. Built with a 5-door, 5-seater estate layout, it measures 4,782 mm in length, 1,866 mm in width, and 1,437 mm in height, with a 2,826 mm wheelbase. Kerb weight is rated at approximately 1.84 tonnes.

Pricing-wise, the standard 2024 RS4 Avant carries an official retail price of RM828,800 in China. In the Taiwan market, the 2026 RS4 Avant is tagged at RM4,990,000 NTD (equivalent to roughly the RM1,100,000 bracket). In overseas markets, pre-owned RS4 Avant units in the UK start from around £33,800.

Design Language

On the styling front, the RS4 Avant injects a host of RS-exclusive performance cues onto the standard A4 Avant body. Up front, it sports a hexagonal Singleframe grille with a 3D honeycomb mesh, flanked by aggressive lower air dams and massive intake ducts. The LED headlamps feature adaptive high beam, dynamic cornering lights, and an all-weather mode. Along the flanks, sharp character lines paired with the signature quattro blister flared wheel arches create a muscular stance. The rear is punctuated by a pair of substantial oval exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the cabin retains the clean layout of the A4 range while layering on RS-specific luxury and motorsport flair. Highlights include the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit Plus, capable of displaying RS-specific driving telemetry such as torque output and G-meter readings. RS sports seats upholstered in Fine Nappa leather provide superb lateral bolster support, with heating and massage functions fitted as standard for the front row. A 10.1-inch central touchscreen handles voice commands, complemented by RS carbon-fibre trim inserts and a Bang & Olufsen 3D surround sound system.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the RS4 Avant houses the EA839 2.9-litre direct-injection twin-turbo V6 engine co-developed with Porsche. Displacing 2,894 cc, this V6 mill churns out 450 PS (331 kW) and 600 Nm of peak torque. Over 90% of maximum torque is accessible across a broad rev band from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm, delivering punchy tractability from low revs.

Power is channelled through an 8-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic transmission (non-dual-clutch), striking an ideal balance between shift smoothness and long-term durability. Audi’s signature quattro permanent all-wheel drive system features a mechanical Torsen centre differential with a default 40:60 rear-biased torque split.

Performance figures see the RS4 Avant sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in an official 4.1 seconds, though independent media tests routinely clock in faster at 3.8 to 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h, unlockable to 280 km/h via optional packages. Combined fuel consumption on the WLTC cycle is rated at around 9.07 L/100 km.

Chassis & Handling

Riding on the MLB Evo platform, the RS4 Avant features five-link independent suspension front and rear, utilising extensive aluminium components to shed unsprung mass. It comes equipped with RS sport suspension plus featuring Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) , effectively curbing body roll in aggressive cornering. The car rides on 275/30 R20 ultra-low-profile performance tyres. Braking is handled by ventilated discs clamped by six-piston calipers up front, while a carbon-ceramic brake package and an RS sport exhaust system are available as options.

In terms of drive modes, the RS4 Avant offers selectable profiles. In Comfort mode, it behaves as docile as a regular A6 for daily commutes; switch to Dynamic mode, and throttle response sharpens instantly, gears are held longer, and the exhaust opens up with pronounced pops and crackles on downshifts. It also completed the elk test at 76 km/h.

Cabin & Equipment

In terms of in-car tech, the RS4 Avant is fitted as standard with the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit Plus and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen running the latest MMI system with voice command and satellite navigation. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Comfort amenities include standard heated and massaging front RS sports seats across the range. Rear seat heating is available as an option (priced at RM5,000), while the Black Edition offers optional ventilated front seats (priced at RM9,000). The rear bench features a 40:20:40 split-folding layout, offering a standard boot capacity of 505 litres that expands up to 1,495 litres.

Audio duties are handled by a standard Bang & Olufsen 3D surround sound system.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The RS4 Avant is equipped with Level 2 driver assistance systems. Active safety features comprise: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Jam Assist, Audi pre sense front, Active Lane Assist and Lane Departure Warning, Collision Avoidance Assist, Turn Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Assist, Audi pre sense rear, and Audi pre sense basic.

On the passive safety front, the car comes standard with 6 airbags, alongside Driver Fatigue Alert, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA/BAS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

Market Performance & Reviews

The RS4 Avant occupies a niche yet esteemed spot in the global fast estate market, going head-to-head with rivals such as the BMW M3 Touring (G81) and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate.

In the Chinese market, however, sales have fallen short of expectations, recording just 2 units in March 2026. Analysts attribute this to the RS lineup's relatively late entry into China (11 years behind rivals like the BMW M3), missing early market momentum; additionally, the 2.9T V6's aftermarket tuning headroom is perceived to lag behind rivals like BMW's S58 engine. Furthermore, dealership discount structures on the Audi RS5 led to on-the-road price inversions, further squeezing demand for the RS4.

Motoring reviews note that the key strength of the RS4 Avant remains its uncanny ability to marry 450 PS of supercar-baiting pace with the sheer versatility of a family estate. The cabin is impeccably built, and the MMI infotainment system is intuitive to operate. Dynamically, the quattro all-wheel drive system delivers unshakeable grip in any weather. On the flip side, reviewers note that driving engagement feels slightly clinical compared to sharper competitors, and the exhaust note lacks emotional drama; rear passenger space is relatively tight with a prominent transmission tunnel compromise; and the ultra-low-profile tyres, while aiding lateral grip, transmit noticeable road harshness over rough tarmac.

As a high-performance wagon that balances track-ready capability with family utility, the Audi RS4 Avant continues to hold strong appeal among petrolheads seeking a versatile daily driver that can seamlessly double as a track weapon, thanks to its distinct character, meticulous build quality, and dependable quattro AWD heritage.
