Nissan Z Kaze concept brings back the T-Top with a 1990s JDM twist

Nissan has unveiled the new Z Kaze concept at the ZCON enthusiast gathering in Phoenix, Arizona.

Based on the current Nissan Z, the one-off concept features a custom T-top removable roof and a carbon-fibre aerodynamic package, drawing inspiration from 1990s tuning culture and some of Nissan's classic open-top Z sports cars.

The name "Kaze" comes from the Japanese word for wind, reflecting the sense of freedom that comes with driving with the roof panels removed.

Created jointly by Nissan's product planning and design teams, the Z Kaze is a one-off concept built around three themes: nostalgia, heritage and driving enjoyment. It pays tribute to all seven generations of the Z sports car.

The biggest talking point is the roof. The Z Kaze features a custom-engineered T-top removable roof made up of two glass panels separated by a central support beam.

The design recalls the T-top roofs used on classic Nissan models such as the 300ZX (Z31 and Z32) in the 1980s and 1990s, a feature that became a favourite among Z enthusiasts. Remove the two panels and both driver and passenger get a more open-air driving experience, with little standing between them and the wind.

The T-top is joined by a full set of carbon-fibre aerodynamic parts, including a front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, giving the Z Kaze a much more aggressive, track-inspired look.

The exterior colour and detailing also draw heavily from the aesthetics of 1990s JDM tuning culture, giving the concept the kind of presence that would not look out of place at SEMA.

The Z Kaze will next be displayed at the Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach, California, on 3 October.

The concept follows shortly after the updated 2027 Nissan Z, while Nissan executives have previously said the company is considering a broader sports-car line-up.

The Z Kaze is still a one-off concept rather than a production model, but its combination of classic Z design cues and modern customisation gives an interesting glimpse at how Nissan could play with the Z's heritage in the future.
