Kimi Antonelli wins Italian GP from P19 as Mercedes seals 1-2 finish

Kimi Antonelli pulled off a remarkable comeback at Monza, winning the Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid on 6 September.

The Mercedes driver took his seventh win of the 2026 season at his home race, becoming the first Italian to win at Monza in 60 years. His teammate George Russell finished second, giving Mercedes a 1-2, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen completed the podium in third.

Charles Leclerc crashes out at Monza

Antonelli started from the back after taking a grid penalty for exceeding his permitted allocation of power unit components.

Things went badly for Ferrari at its home race, with Charles Leclerc crashing into the barriers on lap three after running off the track. He escaped the car unhurt but was forced to retire.

Antonelli, meanwhile, worked his way through the field with consistent pace and careful tyre management, eventually completing one of the biggest comebacks of the season.

Kimi Antonelli extends championship lead

The result leaves Antonelli on 267 points, with George Russell second on 201 points, 66 behind his teammate.

Lewis Hamilton is third on 191 points, followed by Lando Norris on 171, Charles Leclerc on 155 and Max Verstappen on 127.

Mercedes also strengthened its position in the constructors' championship, moving to 468 points. Ferrari sits second on 346, followed by McLaren on 287 and Red Bull on 204.

Madring hosts the 14th F1 race

The Spanish Grand Prix will take place from 11 to 13 September at the Madring Circuit, one of the new additions to the 2026 F1 calendar.

After Monza, the teams face another high-speed venue at Madring, putting further pressure on both power unit performance and aerodynamic setup.
