BYD launches ATTO 1 and M9 in Hong Kong, starting from HK$169,360

BYD has introduced two new models in Hong Kong: the ATTO 1, its smallest and most affordable passenger car, and the M9 DM-i plug-in hybrid MPV.

The ATTO 1 is priced from HK$169,360. The M9 DM-i is available in two versions, with the Advanced priced at HK$458,000 and the Premium at HK$596,900. A limited-time early-bird offer reduces the M9's prices to HK$428,800 and HK$566,800.

ATTO 1

The ATTO 1 is BYD's entry-level model and is based on the Seagull sold in China. In some other markets, the same car is known as the Surf.

At 3,990mm long, 1,720mm wide and 1,590mm tall, the ATTO 1 is a compact hatchback with a 2,500mm wheelbase. The Hong Kong version is 210mm longer than the 3,780mm Mainland-spec car. The extra length helps it meet different crash-test requirements.

The interior gets BYD's familiar multi-layered dashboard design, with soft-touch materials used across the upper dashboard, door panels and other areas around the cabin.

The Hong Kong model is configured with five seats, including a headrest for the middle rear passenger. Space is fairly limited, given the car's narrow cabin.

Equipment includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 360-degree camera, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable driver's seat and wireless charging. The rear seatbacks can also be folded flat to free up more luggage space.

The ATTO 1 uses a 55kW front-mounted electric motor with 135Nm of torque, drawing power from a 38.8kWh battery. Claimed range is 380km on the NEDC cycle, while the suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.

M9 DM-i

The M9 DM-i first appeared in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong International Automobile Expo in June. It is sold as the BYD Xia in the Mainland and is already available in several right-hand-drive markets.

The M9 has the proportions expected of a large luxury MPV, with BYD's Dragon Face design clearly visible at the front. The grille and headlights also carry elements of the brand's latest styling language.

Measuring 5,145mm long, 1,970mm wide and 1,805mm tall, the M9 has a 3,045mm wheelbase. The side profile is fairly upright, with a straight shoulder line running towards the rear, while the full-width tail light gives the back end a cleaner appearance.

Inside, the M9 uses a layout inspired by the traditional Chinese "Four Waters Returning to the Hall" courtyard design.

More importantly, the equipment list is extensive, with leather power-adjustable seats, a 15.6-inch power-folding display for the second row, second-row massage functions, power-folding third-row seats, a digital rear-view mirror, an in-car refrigerator, 50W wireless charging and an AR-projected tailgate opening system.

Power comes from BYD's DM-i plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a front-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The range-topping Premium gets a 36.6kWh Blade Battery and has a claimed 145km WLTP electric-only range.
