Lexus reveals new NX with sharper styling and upgraded hybrid technology

Lexus has revealed the new NX, giving its midsize SUV a series of updates, including a redesigned exterior, upgraded cabin technology and a new-generation hybrid system.

The update follows Lexus' "DISCOVER YOUR EDGE" philosophy, which the company says is about pushing beyond familiar boundaries and exploring new possibilities.

At the front, the NX gets a sharper interpretation of Lexus' signature styling, with slim dual-line headlights and a wider, lower stance. Around the back, the SUV introduces Lexus' new double-L rear light signature, along with illuminated LEXUS lettering.

The new Lexus NX measures 4,690 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall, with a 2,690 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the new NX introduces Lexus' "Performing Arts" concept, which focuses on creating an immersive cabin environment.

The system links lighting, audio, climate control and fragrance settings. Drivers and passengers can choose from three modes and five fragrance themes, with lighting and sound effects working together to create different cabin moods.

A new ABALOS interior colour has also been added. Inspired by the sand dunes found in the northern hemisphere of Mars, the warm tone gives the cabin a more distinctive look while adding another layer of personalisation.

The dashboard takes on a horizontal layout, with the digital instrument cluster and central display positioned side by side to create a wider, more open view ahead of the driver.

A redesigned steering wheel features hidden touch controls, while the ambient lighting strip continues across the dashboard and into the doors.

For versions equipped with the Mark Levinson audio system, the speaker grilles are finished in metal with surrounding light rings, adding a more premium touch to the cabin.

The new NX is fitted with the latest Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 (LSS+ 4.0), with improvements to sensor coverage and detection range.

The system brings upgrades to several driver assistance features, including driver monitoring, the driver emergency response system, Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and 360-degree camera.

Lexus has also worked on the NX's underlying structure. Floor rigidity has increased by around 25%, and suspension tower rigidity is up by approximately 30%.

The stiffer body structure is designed to improve steering response while helping reduce vibration and road noise.

The E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system has also been retuned, giving the NX better traction and stability on slippery surfaces.

The biggest mechanical update comes from Lexus' latest hybrid system, which focuses on improving both efficiency and response.

A new e-Axle electric drive unit integrates the transaxle, motor and power control unit into a single, more compact package. The revised layout helps reduce weight while lowering the vehicle's centre of gravity.

The inverter now uses low-loss silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, improving electrical efficiency. Increased battery output contributes to stronger performance.

For the plug-in hybrid NX 450h+, the system produces between 215 kW and 240 kW, depending on specification. Lexus quotes a 0-100km/h acceleration time of around 6 seconds, with up to 140 km of pure-electric range under Japan's WLTC cycle.
