Roadside Unit (RSU)

Roadside Unit (Road Side Unit, abbreviated as RSU), is the core communication and computing equipment deployed on the road infrastructure side of the vehicle-road collaboration (V2X) system. It is usually installed on roadside utility poles, gantries, or street light poles, serving as the "information hub" connecting vehicles, road infrastructure, and cloud platforms. If the vehicle-road collaboration network is likened to a "smart transportation system", then RSU is the "nerve endings" distributed across the roads, responsible for perceiving, processing, and transmitting traffic information.

Core Functions and Technical Architecture

The core value of RSU lies in compensating for single-vehicle intelligence limitations, providing vehicles withOver-Horizon PerceptionandGlobal Traffic Information, allowing vehicles to gain a "God's Eye View".

Its workflow can be summarized as:Collection → Computation → Broadcast.

  • Sensing Layer (Information Collection): RSU connects via roadside cameras, millimeter-wave radars, LiDAR, and other sensors, collecting traffic flow, vehicle positions, pedestrian intrusions, road conditions, and other information in real-time.

  • Computing Layer (Edge Processing): RSU is built-in with high-performance edge computing chips, capable of fusing and analyzing sensor data locally to achieve millisecond-level event recognition and decision-making. This "local computation" model avoids the latency of uploading all data to the cloud, and is a necessity to meet the demands of traffic safety applications.

  • Communication Layer (Information Interaction): This is the most core function of RSU, communicating with the outside world mainly through two modes:

    • Direct Communication (PC5 Interface): Through C-V2X or DSRC technology, communicating directly with vehicles (OBU), pedestrian devices, or other RSUs within hundreds of meters in the surroundings withLow Latency (Millisecond Level), broadcasting collision warnings, traffic light status, and other key safety information.

    • Cellular Communication (Uu Interface): Connected to the cloud platform through 4G/5G networks to achieve upload and download of non-real-time big data such as traffic flow statistics and map updates.

Furthermore, RSU can also provide high-precision positioning assistance for vehicles. For example, by exchanging signals between multiple RSUs and vehicles for Round-Trip Time (RTT) or utilizing their known precise positions, vehicles can achieve high-precision positioning in areas with weak GPS signals such as tunnels.

Industry Status: Moving from Demonstration to Scalable Deployment

RSU is a key infrastructure of the "Vehicle-Road-Cloud Integration" strategy, currently moving from demonstration verification in pilot zones to accelerated large-scale coverage on trunk roads. Currently, mainstream equipment vendors have launched new-generation RSU products that conform to LTE-V2X and NR-V2X standards. Significant optimizations have been made in hardware integration, volume, and power consumption, creating conditions for large-scale deployment.

It is important to emphasize: RSU belongs toDriving Assistance and Collaborative Perception Infrastructure. The effectiveness and real-time nature of the information provided highly depend on the coverage and stability of the communication network, and cannot completely replace the vehicle's own sensor system. Drivers must not ignore active observation and judgment of the road environment due to reliance on RSU-provided warning information, and must bear ultimate responsibility for driving safety.
