Zhidou Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (trading globally as Zhidou Auto or 知豆汽车) is an independent Chinese electric car manufacturer originally established in 2006 by mechanical innovator Bao Wenguang in Linhai, Zhejiang Province, China. The enterprise spearheaded China’s earliest post-millennial transition toward specialized urban micro-mobility, famously engineering the legendary Zhidou D1, D2, and D3 series.

Following a historic joint-venture alliance with the global automotive giant Geely and subsequent structural financial overhauls, the brand underwent a complete technological and capital renaissance, backed by Geely and the Aima Group. Headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang, the company uses its micro-chassis engineering heritage to spearhead premium intelligent urban electric vehicles (EVs) for global young commuters.

Development History

The New Energy Pioneer and the Early European Conquests (2006–2014)

The corporate lineage began in Zhejiang when engineer Bao Wenguang recognized a massive structural gap in the global automotive sector: while mainstream brands were trying to build large, heavy electric sedans, dense global megacities were desperate for microscopic, cheap commuter runabouts. He established Xindayang Mechanical and Electrical Group's automotive research division, locking away software programmers and battery technicians to build a dedicated electric micro-platform.

In 2014, the company officially launched the Zhidou brand name, unleashing the Zhidou D1. The vehicle was an absolute technical revelation of urban packaging: it proved to an international motoring public that a tiny, 2.7-metre-long electric car could deliver robust highway capabilities. Zhidou became an absolute early export vanguard, shipping thousands of D1 and D2 microcars to European car-sharing programs in Italy, Spain, and France, establishing an early global footprint years before its domestic rivals.

The Geely Alliance and the First Capital Storm (2015–2019)

In 2015, seeking a premier technical and manufacturing foothold to scale up production, Zhidou executed a historic corporate masterstroke by forging a multi-million-pound joint venture with Geely Holding Group, forming Lanzhou Zhidou Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. Supported by Geely's immense component factories and supply chain networks, Zhidou launched the heavily upgraded Zhidou D2 and the premium D3 (2017).

The strategy was a massive commercial stampede: Zhidou's annual sales quickly surged past 42,000 units, capturing a dominant monopoly over China's early A00-class EV taxi and commuter sectors, winning the national "State Technological Invention Award". However, by 2019, the Chinese government radically restructured its national New Energy subsidy framework, completely cutting off cash support for low-range microcars. Stripped of subsidies and buried under sudden cash-flow pressures, Zhidou's production lines ground to a sudden halt, forcing the company into a long period of bankruptcy restructuring.
