Windscreen Repair

2026-10-12 22:30:00

Definition and Core Role

Windscreen repair refers to a professional technical procedure designed to restore the structural integrity and optical clarity of a vehicle's front windscreen after localised damage (such as bull's-eyes, star cracks, or minor fissures) caused by stone chips or external impacts, achieved by injecting high-transparency resin into the damaged spot and curing it. Windscreen repair is not a catch-all solution; its primary value lies in preventing minor chips and cracks from spreading due to temperature variations or road vibrations at a fraction of the cost and downtime of a full replacement.

Assessing Repairability

Whether a windscreen can be repaired depends on the glass construction and the severity of the damage.

Only laminated glass can be repaired; tempered glass cannot. Front windscreens are constructed from laminated glass—consisting of a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer bonded between two sheets of glass. Upon impact, damage is usually confined to the outer glass layer while the inner layer and PVB interlayer remain intact, creating a void that can be filled with resin. In contrast, tempered glass used for side windows and rear screens shatters entirely into tiny granules upon impact, leaving replacement as the only option.

Repairable damage types include: minor chips, cracks, or pits not exceeding 2 cm in diameter; star cracks, bull's-eyes, and short linear cracks; and isolated white surface pits under 0.5 cm in diameter without radiating cracks. Non-repairable conditions include: cracks exceeding 30 cm in length; damage situated directly in the driver's primary line of sight; cracks extending to the edge of the windscreen; and damage penetrating both glass layers or covering an excessively wide surface area. The golden window for repair is within 48 hours of the damage occurring; dust or rainwater entering the pit will compromise resin bonding, degrading repair clarity and long-term durability.

Technical Principle

The principle of windscreen repair is akin to a dental resin filling—high-clarity liquid resin is injected into the pits and fissures of the damaged area, using vacuum suction to ensure complete penetration into every crevice before rapid UV light curing. Once cured, the resin bonds seamlessly with the glass, concealing the blemish and halting crack propagation. A proper repair restores the structural strength of the glass to over 90% of original factory specifications.

Standard Operating Procedure

A professional windscreen repair typically follows these steps:

Cleaning and Preparation: Thoroughly clean the damaged area using alcohol and glass cleaner to remove all glass dust and contaminants, ensuring a clean, smooth base. The glass must remain completely dry prior to repair, and protective covers should be draped over the bodywork to prevent paint scratches during the process.

Positioning and Vacuuming: Attach a small inspection mirror to the inside of the glass to monitor the crack profile for accurate alignment. Mount the repair bridge with its suction cup centred directly over the impact point, then install the vacuum injector. Thoroughly evacuate trapped air and moisture from within the damage cavity via vacuum extraction.

Resin Injection: Load the specialized repair resin into the injector and press it into the damaged spot. Under pressure, the resin flows into and fills every micro-crevice of the crack. Depending on the damage type, alternating vacuum and pressure cycles may be repeated several times.

Curing: Once the resin has completely filled the damaged area, expose it to a UV curing lamp for several minutes to facilitate rapid hardening.

Finishing and Polishing: Scrape off excess cured resin from the glass surface using a razor blade held at a 90-degree angle, followed by local polishing of the repaired area.

Repair Costs

Windscreen repair costs vary depending on the size of the damage, repair equipment used, and the workshop, generally ranging from RM100 to RM500.

Damage Type Reference Cost
Isolated white spot (< 0.5 cm diameter) RM200–RM400
Minor star/linear crack Approx. RM100
20 cm scratch RM200–RM500
0.5–1 cm damage (including minor star cracks) RM400–RM600
DIY repair kit (self-application) RM50–RM100

Labour rates in major urban centres are typically 15% to 20% higher than in smaller towns. Vehicles equipped with Head-Up Displays (HUD), rain sensors, or ADAS driver assistance cameras feature more specialized glass, demanding higher repair precision and attracting higher service charges.

Industry Standards

Windscreen repair is regulated by established industry standards. T/IAC CAMRA 47.3-2022 "Technical Specification for Low-Carbon Repair of Automotive Body Panels - Part 3: Automotive Glass" was jointly released by the Insurance Association of China and the China Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association, taking effect on 10 December 2022. The standard mandates that repairs be performed in an enclosed bay at an ambient temperature of 26–32°C by certified technicians. Furthermore, T/SDAMTIA 0003-2025 "Technical Specification for Automotive Glass Scratch Repair" came into force on 1 June 2025, detailing standard operating guidelines for scratch removal on automotive glass.

Post-Repair Care and Precautions

Observe the following after a repair: Avoid high-pressure car washes within 48 hours; do not wash or wet the repaired spot within 24 hours; protect the repaired area from heavy impacts and excessive heat; and do not wash the vehicle before the repair to prevent trapped water from compromising resin bonding. If the damage cannot be attended to immediately, seal the chip with clear adhesive tape to keep out dirt and water, and avoid driving over rough terrain or harsh braking to prevent the crack from spreading.
