Brand Overview

Volvo Trucks is a core commercial vehicle brand of the Swedish Volvo Group. It produced its first truck in 1928 and is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, with quality, safety, and environmental protection as its core values. Its products cover medium to heavy-duty full-series truck solutions, and it provides comprehensive financial and service solutions. The brand has assembly plants in 12 countries worldwide, with distribution and service systems covering approximately 130 countries and 2,200 outlets, and cumulative deliveries have exceeded 1.2 million units.

Development History

In 1927, Volvo Cars was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the following year the first truck, the LV40, rolled off the line—a model equipped with a four-cylinder engine and a payload of 1.5 tons, marking the starting point of Volvo's commercial vehicle business. Over the following decades, Volvo successively expanded its product range, laying the technical foundation for Nordic heavy truck manufacturing. Entering the 21st century, Volvo accelerated its global capacity expansion and electrification transformation: mass production of electric trucks began in 2019; in 2022, the first battery assembly plant was built in Ghent, Belgium, to promote electrification; in 2024, it received the highest five-star rating in Euro NCAP commercial vehicle testing.

Product Portfolio

Volvo Trucks has built a full-scenario product range covering long-haul trunk transport, regional distribution, construction, and urban logistics. The FH series is positioned as the flagship long-haul tractor, redesigned around the driver in 2012, significantly improving comfort and intelligence levels. The FH16 is equipped with a more powerful powertrain, targeting heavy-load transportation. The FM series focuses on short-haul logistics and regional distribution, with flexible power configurations and wide adaptability. The FMX is designed specifically for construction, with reinforced chassis and suspension to handle harsh road conditions and heavy loads. The FL is the lightest model in the urban logistics range, suitable for navigating narrow roads; the FE offers stronger power and higher load capacity, covering medium and short-haul intercity distribution. The VN series (including VNL, VNM, etc.) is exclusive to the North American market for long-nose heavy trucks, known for its streamlined long-nose design and excellent fuel economy. All mainstream models across the full range have achieved electrification coverage, forming the industry's most complete range of commercial electric trucks.

Market Performance

In 2025, Volvo Trucks delivered approximately 120,000 units globally, maintaining a leading position in core markets such as China, Europe, and North America. Its leading position in the European heavy truck (16 tons and above) market was further consolidated—overall market share in 2025 increased from 17.9% to 19.0%, with significant growth in new registrations in markets such as the UK, France, and Germany. Among them, the FH Aero secured nearly 33,000 orders in a single year due to aerodynamic and other optimizations. In its home market of Sweden, it delivered 1,914 units in 2025, with a market share of 38.1%. It also maintains stable sales performance in the Indian market through the joint venture VE Commercial Vehicles. In terms of electrification, its products have been sold to over 50 countries, covering diverse scenarios such as urban distribution and construction.

Core Technology

Volvo Trucks maintains deep technical expertise in three major areas: powertrain, intelligent safety, and new energy three-electric systems. In the powertrain area, the I-Shift intelligent transmission launched in 2019 deeply integrates with the engine to optimize shift timing and fuel economy, and has become an industry benchmark solution. In the intelligent safety area, standard equipment includes Dynamic Steering (VDS) and Stability Assist, significantly reducing safety risks such as rollover and loss of control, and the brand received the highest five-star rating in Euro NCAP commercial vehicle testing in 2024. In the new energy area, its technical strategy advances three paths in parallel: battery electric, fuel cell electric, and internal combustion engines using renewable fuels. The next-generation FH Aero Electric, to be launched in 2026, is equipped with an electric axle, a battery capacity of 780 kWh, a range increased to 700 km, and adapts to megawatt-level fast charging standards (MCS), significantly improving charging efficiency. Its all-electric platform models are being produced simultaneously at the Gothenburg, Sweden and Ghent, Belgium factories.

Global Presence

Volvo Trucks is centered on Sweden, building a production and distribution system that covers the globe. It has assembly bases in 12 countries worldwide, and its distribution and service network covers approximately 130 countries and 2,200 outlets. In Europe, the Tuve factory in Gothenburg, Sweden and the Ghent factory in Belgium handle the core production tasks for heavy trucks and electric trucks. In North America, factories in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania supply 100% of the trucks sold in the US, and production capacity is continuously being expanded. The Monterrey factory in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, represents an investment of $700 million to $1 billion and is expected to start operations in 2026, serving the US, Mexico, and Latin American markets. At the same time, factories and assembly bases have been built in Australia, Brazil, South Africa, India (through the VE Commercial Vehicles joint venture), and the Middle East. In the Chinese market, the acquisition of JMC Heavy Duty Vehicle was terminated in 2023, and since then the brand has continued to deepen its presence through imported models and localized services.

Future Outlook

Volvo Trucks has set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, and in May 2026 announced a technology investment plan worth billions of Swedish kronor to upgrade its entire range of powertrains. Volvo Trucks will promote electric trucks with an ultra-long range of 700 km in Europe, and will begin accepting orders for the VNL Electric model in North America. A brand new 13-liter diesel and gas engine platform is adapted for renewable fuels, while hydrogen internal combustion engine technology is also accelerating R&D and is planned to enter commercialization before 2030. These moves will further consolidate Volvo Trucks' global competitiveness in high emission standards and the high-end commercial vehicle market.
