2026-10-08 04:50:00

The Volvo S90 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), formerly designated as the "S90 RECHARGE" within Volvo's official product lineup, is a flagship executive plug-in hybrid luxury saloon produced by Volvo Asia Pacific. Serving as the range-topping powertrain variant of the S90 model line, the S90 PHEV features the same T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the XC90, carving out a distinct niche in the executive luxury saloon segment with its potent performance and Volvo's signature safety DNA. Currently on sale, the 2026 Volvo S90 PHEV is offered in three variants—Zhiyi Luxury Edition, Zhiyuan Luxury Edition, and Zhiya Luxury Edition—with official recommended retail pricing ranging from RM499,900 to RM613,900.

Design Language

In terms of exterior styling, the 2026 S90 PHEV retains the Volvo family's signature Scandinavian minimalist design. The front fascia features a vertical slatted front grille flanked by the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights (with adaptive LED high and low beams), complemented by smoked and chrome accents along the lower front bumper. The sleek side profile is accentuated by conventional door handles alongside chrome detailing along the window surrounds and side skirts for added sophistication. At the rear, C-shaped tail lamps are paired with lower bumper chrome trim and a concealed exhaust design. Vehicle dimensions stand at 5,090 mm in length, 1,879 mm in width, and 1,453 mm in height, with a 3,061 mm wheelbase. Wheel-wise, the Zhiyi Luxury Edition rides on 18-inch alloy wheels (245/45 R18), while the Zhiyuan and Zhiya Luxury Editions step up to 19-inch alloys (255/40 R19). The cabin maintains the Scandinavian minimalist ethos, housing a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The Zhiyuan Luxury Edition and Zhiya Luxury Edition further gain an Orrefors crystal gear selector.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the S90 PHEV is powered by a T8 plug-in hybrid setup pairing a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The internal combustion engine produces a maximum output of 228 kW (310 PS), while the rear electric motor generates approximately 107 kW (145 PS). This delivers a total system output of 335 kW (approx. 455 PS) and a combined peak torque of 709 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The saloon completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds, with top speed capped at 180 km/h. Energy is supplied by an 18.8 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack. In pure electric mode, it delivers a range of up to 102 km under CLTC testing, and 80 km on the WLTC cycle. Total CLTC combined range on a full tank and full charge reaches up to 1,412 km. Rated combined fuel consumption is as low as 1.92 L/100 km (WLTC), with depleted battery fuel consumption rated at 6.2 L/100 km. AC charging takes approximately 5 hours for a full charge.

Chassis & Handling

The S90 PHEV is built on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) modular platform. Power is distributed via an electric all-wheel-drive (eAWD) setup, where the petrol engine drives the front wheels while the rear electric motor powers the rear axle. Suspension-wise, a comfort chassis is fitted as standard, with higher-spec variants offering an optional 4C active adaptive chassis with rear air suspension. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system, while braking duties are managed by ventilated discs all round. Drivers can toggle between multiple driving modes—including Hybrid, Pure, and Performance—via the central touchscreen to suit various driving scenarios and preferences.

Cabin & Equipment

The S90 PHEV's interior seamlessly blends technology with luxury. Standard across the range are a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display and a 9-inch central touchscreen. The infotainment system runs on a native Google Android OS powered by an Intel A3960 automotive chipset. It supports AutoNavi online navigation, Baidu CarPlay connectivity, OTA software updates, 4G in-car connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot, driver-side voice command recognition, and an integrated Huawei AppGallery. For in-car audio, the Zhiyi Luxury Edition is fitted with a Harman Kardon premium sound system, while the range-topping Zhiya Luxury Edition upgrades to a high-end 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. In terms of upholstery, the Zhiyi Luxury Edition features leatherette trim, whereas the Zhiyuan and Zhiya Luxury Editions upgrade to Nappa leather seats. Standard across the board are powered front seats, front seat heating, and driver seat memory; the Zhiyuan Luxury Edition adds front seat ventilation and massage functions; the Zhiya Luxury Edition further incorporates front passenger seat memory alongside heated and ventilated rear seats. Additional creature comforts include an operable panoramic sunroof with electric sunblind, four-zone automatic climate control, and rear privacy glass. Boot capacity is rated at 436 litres.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

Safety remains the core DNA of the Volvo marque. The S90 PHEV comes equipped with the third-generation City Safety suite. Pilot Assist is fitted as standard across the range, delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The ADAS suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Departure Alert, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Information System / Lane Change Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and active safety pre-collision warning systems. The Zhiyuan and Zhiya Luxury Editions further benefit from a 360-degree surround-view camera and automated park assist. Passive safety highlights comprise dual front airbags, driver's knee airbag, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and Volvo's Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) for front occupants.

Market Performance & Verdict

Within the executive plug-in hybrid luxury saloon segment, the S90 PHEV contends with fierce competition from established rivals such as the Audi A6L, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and BMW 5 Series. Throughout 2025, the S90 PHEV recorded cumulative sales of 2,880 units, with November 2025 sales tallying 197 units. Against German segment rivals that consistently clock five-figure monthly sales figures, the S90 PHEV's market volume remains relatively modest. Industry analysts note that while the S90 PHEV holds clear advantages in cabin roominess, safety equipment, and fuel efficiency, its overall brand cachet still faces tough head-to-head rivalry against German luxury competitors. Nonetheless, as Volvo's flagship saloon, the S90 PHEV strikes an impressive balance between performance and eco-efficiency courtesy of its T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. Backed by class-leading safety credentials, Scandinavian design elegance, and an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain, it retains a distinct appeal among discerning buyers who prioritise safety and refined quality.
