Volvo S60

2026-10-06 16:30:00

The Volvo S60 is a luxury compact executive sedan under Volvo Cars, slotted between the S90 and S40, with key rivals including German luxury mid-size sedans such as the Audi A4L, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The S60 currently on sale is the third-generation model, which was first launched in the Chinese domestic market in December 2019. As of June 2026, the latest offering is the 2027 model year facelift, available in 4 variants with an official price range of RM306,900 to RM384,900. Notably, the Volvo S60 is imported and sold in the Chinese market in its global standard-wheelbase guise without any local wheelbase elongation.

Design Language

The exterior of the Volvo S60 continues the brand's signature Scandinavian design philosophy. Up front, it is available in two styling packages: Luxury and Sport—the Luxury variant features a vertical-slat chrome grille, while the Sport variant sports a darkened dot-matrix grille. Flanking the front are the signature "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, matched with "Viking Axe" C-shaped LED tail lamps at the rear, both being iconic Volvo hallmarks. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,778 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,437 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,872 mm. The drag coefficient is rated at an impressive 0.27 Cd. The 2027 model year introduces a new "Glow Grey Metallic" paint option. Inside, the cabin adopts a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic anchored by a T-shaped dashboard layout. Upholstery and trim materials include Nordico sustainable leather and FSC-certified Nordic forest wood inlays. The seats, co-developed with orthopaedic surgeons, feature seat cushions that are 5 cm longer than conventional seats, while the headrest-integrated WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) reduces the risk of cervical spine injuries by 50% in rear-end collisions.

Powertrain and Performance

The Volvo S60 range is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system as standard, offered in two states of tune: B4 and B5. The B4 variant delivers a maximum output of 145 kW (197 PS) and 300 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds with a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 5.95 L/100 km. The B5 variant produces 184 kW (250 PS) and 360 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, hitting 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds alongside a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 6.33 L/100 km. The entire lineup comes in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. The 48V mild-hybrid setup provides electrical assistance off the line and under acceleration, while harvesting kinetic energy during deceleration to optimise fuel efficiency.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Volvo S60 rides on a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a multi-link independent rear suspension. The rear setup utilises a transverse composite leaf spring instead of conventional coil springs, effectively reducing unsprung weight whilst sharpening dynamic response. The overall chassis tuning leans toward ride comfort, doing an excellent job of soaking up road imperfections and surface chatter. Higher-spec variants feature the 4C adaptive chassis, which monitors road conditions in real time to continuously adjust damper settings. The electronic power steering is calibrated for a light, effortless feel, making it well-suited for urban commuting. Multiple drive modes are also on hand to tailor driving characteristics.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside the cockpit, the Volvo S60 comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a portrait-oriented 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The infotainment runs on native Android OS and comes pre-loaded with apps including AutoNavi Maps, Huawei AppGallery, Tmall Genie, and Tencent Aiquting, while supporting iFLYTEK natural voice recognition and 4G connectivity. Mid-to-high trim variants are treated to an Orrefors crystal gear selector. Audiophiles can opt for premium Harman Kardon or flagship Bowers & Wilkins sound systems. Furthermore, the entire range comes standard with the CLEANZONE® cabin air system, incorporating a dual-action air purification setup.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance

Safety remains the core DNA of the Volvo marque. Structurally, 37.6% of the S60's body shell is made of ultra-high-strength boron steel, complemented by 7 airbags fitted as standard across the range. On the active safety front, the 3rd-generation City Safety suite comes standard, featuring Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). At speeds below 60 km/h, the system can completely mitigate collisions. High-spec models are equipped with Pilot Assist, offering full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) operational from 0 to 130 km/h along with Lane Centring Assist. The 2026 B4 Zhiyi Luxury variant also gains ACC Adaptive Cruise Control as standard.

Market Performance and Verdict

The Volvo S60 enjoys a stellar reputation among buyers for its uncompromised safety and distinctive Scandinavian design. In terms of sales, the S60 registered 2,260 units in May 2026 and 2,451 units in January 2026, cementing its position as one of Volvo's core volume drivers in China. Nonetheless, a sales gap remains when pitted against established benchmark rivals like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4L. Having undergone several model-year refreshes since its 2019 debut, the current S60 shows its age somewhat against newer competitors in terms of digital cockpit flair and advanced driver assistance systems. Even so, backed by attractive showroom discounts and dealer rebates, the S60 continues to deliver strong value-for-money appeal within the tier-two luxury compact executive sedan segment.
