Volkswagen Touareg

2026-10-08 03:30:00

The Volkswagen Touareg is the flagship mid-to-large luxury SUV under the Volkswagen marque. All Touareg units sold in the domestic market are fully imported (CBU) models. On 23 January 2026, Volkswagen officially introduced the 2026 Touareg 3.0 TSI Ruizhen Edition, priced at an official guide price of RM755,800. Positioned as one of the range-topping variants in the Touareg lineup, it features a five-seater layout. Serving as a crucial send-off model for the Touareg nameplate, the 2026 Ruizhen Edition retains its core mechanical architecture while accentuating its premium stature via a de-chromed, blacked-out styling package and an upgraded cabin.

Design Language

The 2026 Touareg 3.0 TSI Ruizhen Edition comes standard with the R-Line blacked-out exterior package. Up front, it sports a smoked honeycomb radiator grille and matrix LED headlamps, complemented by a full-width LED light bar and an illuminated "VW" emblem. The front bumper receives a smoked finish to visually lower the vehicle's stance. Along the sides, it rides on 21-inch petal-style black alloy rims, complemented by black roof rails, window trim, and wing mirror caps. Owing to the revised styling kit, overall length has grown from 4,878 mm to 4,913 mm, while the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,899 mm. The SUV measures 1,984 mm wide and 1,697 mm tall. The rear end is defined by full-width tail lamps, a black rear diffuser, and a dual-exit exhaust setup. Five exterior colour options are offered: Basalt Black, Deep Sea Blue, Karst Grey, Glacier White, and Shell Silver. Inside, the cabin retains the brand's wraparound architecture, anchored by a 15.05-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 12-inch fully digital instrument cluster, forming a triple-screen setup alongside the head-up display (HUD).

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the 2026 Touareg 3.0 TSI Ruizhen Edition is a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine churning out 250 kW (340 PS) and 450 Nm of torque. Drive is sent through a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 5.9 seconds, onward to a top speed of 250 km/h, with a rated combined fuel consumption of 9.9 L/100 km under MIIT testing. Meanwhile, the domestic market also offers a 2.0 TSI four-cylinder turbo variant producing 265 PS and 370 Nm, completing the century sprint in 6.8 seconds. The 2025 2.0 TSI Ruiyue Edition retails at RM508,800, whilst the facelifted Ruiying Edition is priced at RM558,800.

Chassis and Handling

The Touareg is underpinned by Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform. The 2026 Ruizhen Edition comes standard with the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system incorporating a Torsen mechanical centre differential. Operating on a purely mechanical setup, the Torsen differential continuously distributes torque between the front and rear axles as well as side-to-side across the wheels based on prevailing road conditions. Adaptive air suspension comes standard with five adjustable ride height settings, including Off-Road mode (+25 mm), Special Off-Road mode (+70 mm), and Loading mode (-40 mm). The air suspension automatically drops to its lowest setting in Sport mode to enhance high-speed stability, while raising by default in Off-Road mode to maximise ground clearance. Maximum ride height reaches 258 mm, with identical approach and departure angles of 28°. An all-wheel steering system is also fitted to bolster low-speed agility and high-speed manoeuvrability. Drivers can toggle between eight selectable drive modes spanning Eco, Sport, and Off-Road.

Cabin and Features

The cockpit is outfitted with the 15.05-inch Discover Pro infotainment system and a 12-inch digital instrument panel running the Asterix interface, supporting AutoNavi GPS navigation, multimedia features, and Apple CarPlay alongside OTA map updates. Audio duties are handled by a standard 14-speaker DYNAUDIO Consequence premium sound system. Upholstered in high-grade Varenna leather, the front seats feature 18-way power adjustment along with ventilation, seat heating, and eight massage modes. Creature comforts extend to 30-colour ambient lighting, AirCare four-zone automatic climate control, an active air purification system, a rear 220V power socket, dual rear USB charging ports, and powered rear sunshades. Keyless entry and a hands-free powered tailgate are also standard fare. Boot capacity stands at 810 litres, expanding to a generous 1,800 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Touareg comes equipped with the IQ.DRIVE suite, offering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The centerpiece of this suite is Travel Assist, which allows single-button activation to manage acceleration, braking, and steering across the entire speed range. Selected higher-spec models also support automated lane-change assist between 60 km/h and 130 km/h. Active safety systems comprise full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centring Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitoring with Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Driver Fatigue Alert. Furthermore, the SUV features a 360-degree 3D surround-view camera, automated park assist, and remote parking functions. Selected variants also incorporate Night Vision to boost nocturnal road visibility. For passive safety, 10 airbags (including front knee airbags) are standard across the range.

Market Overview and Outlook

First introduced in 2002, the original Touareg once packed a flagship W12 engine, with range-topping trims commanded prices up to RM1,580,000. Following its third-generation debut in 2017, it has shared platform architecture with the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. However, Touareg sales in China have remained subdued in recent years—totalling 6,543 units in 2023 and dipping to a monthly average of roughly 300 units in 2024. Industry observers attribute this sales slump primarily to a stagnant product update cycle, as the current-generation Touareg has seen no major generational overhaul since its 2018 rollout. Reports in September 2025 indicated that supply of the Touareg to the Chinese market would cease from November. Despite boasting formidable underpinnings and sharing its technical DNA with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, the mainstream Volkswagen badge has struggled to sustain such high-end pricing. The Touareg's gradual phase-out mirrors the broader retreat of traditional ICE luxury CBU imports across the Chinese automotive landscape.
