2026-09-22 18:00:04

Model Overview

The Tayron is a core mid-size SUV under FAW-Volkswagen. Since making its domestic debut in 2018, it has consistently remained among the top-selling joint-venture mid-size SUVs, credited to its well-rounded product package and renowned German build quality. The current Tayron lineup employs a dual-generation sales strategy: the 2026 Tayron L is an all-new generation model underpinned by the MQB evo platform, while the 2026 Tayron 30 Million Selection Edition serves as an annual model-year update of the previous generation. The 2026 Tayron L is offered in 5 variants with official guide prices ranging from RM207,900 to RM259,900; the 30 Million Selection Edition comes in 2 variants priced between RM198,900 and RM208,900. In addition, the plug-in hybrid Tayron L PHEV was launched on 25 June 2026, with indicative pre-sale prices ranging from RM174,900 to RM186,900. Key rivals include the SAIC Volkswagen Tiguan L Pro and GAC Toyota Highlander.

Design Language

The 2026 Tayron L retains Volkswagen's signature robust styling while incorporating design cues from the ID. electric family. Up front, it features an integrated front fascia where a full-width light bar seamlessly merges with the radiator grille, accentuated by horizontal chrome garnishes that widen its visual stance and connect smoothly with the headlamps when illuminated. The SUV is offered with dual front styling options: the standard variant sports a sophisticated multi-slat horizontal grille for a dignified look, whereas the R-Line variant boasts a bold black honeycomb mesh paired with aggressive front and rear sports bumpers for a more athletic road presence. Along the sides, sharp, clean character lines and a high-set shoulder line run across the flanks. At the rear, full-width LED taillights illuminate with a distinctive "L" motif. In terms of dimensions, the Tayron L's wheelbase has been stretched to 2,791 mm; the standard Tayron measures 4,593 × 1,860 × 1,665 mm, with a 2,731 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the Tayron L features a driver-oriented wrap-around cockpit layout, with the centre console angled towards the driver. A 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen (upgraded to 15 inches on higher trims) come standard across the range. Top-spec variants further gain an 11.6-inch front passenger entertainment screen, forming a comprehensive multi-screen ecosystem. The cabin is generously trimmed in soft-touch, eco-friendly materials, delivering solid fit and finish.

Powertrain & Performance

The 2026 Tayron L is available with three powertrain options:

  • 300TSI (1.5T): Powered by an EA211 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 118 kW (160 PS) and 250 Nm of torque, ideal for urban drivers seeking optimal fuel economy.

  • 330TSI (2.0T Low Output): Delivers a maximum output of 137 kW (186 PS) and 320 Nm of torque.

  • 380TSI (2.0T High Output): Powered by the third-generation EA888 2.0-litre turbo engine, producing 162 kW (220 PS) and 350 Nm of torque. The 380TSI variants come equipped with the 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

All petrol engines are paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DQ381/DQ500 DSG). Meanwhile, the Tayron L PHEV employs a dedicated 1.5T hybrid engine paired with a P1+P3 dual-motor setup. Backed by a 22 kWh battery pack, it delivers an impressive CLTC electric-only range of 143 km, a total cruising range of 1,439 km on a full tank and full charge, and a depleted-battery fuel consumption as low as 3.1 L/100 km.

Chassis & Handling

Underpinned by the MQB platform, the Tayron rides on a combination of front MacPherson strut independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension. Its German chassis tuning provides superb driving stability—offering firm body roll control and ample mid-to-late suspension support during cornering, while effectively soaking up road imperfections with communicative steering feedback. Motoring media have lauded the setup as having an "addictively engaging German chassis character". The precise electric power steering system complements the rigid chassis setup, striking a fine balance between city agility and high-speed cruising composure.

Cabin & Equipment

The smart digital cockpit is a core upgrade highlight of the 2026 Tayron L. The infotainment system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. The intelligent voice control system, developed by iFLYTEK, boasts a recognition accuracy rate exceeding 90% and supports over 400 vehicle voice commands. Smartphone integration includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife.

Equipment specifications have been systematically revised for the 2026 Tayron L: the standard spare tyre is now relegated to an optional item across the range; front wireless smartphone charging has been uprated to 40W; and practical features like a built-in dashcam, front and rear Type-C ports, ACC Adaptive Cruise Control, and Autonomous Emergency Braking are standard across the board. Higher variants feature the Smart Control Dial—a 1.4-inch circular OLED touchscreen knob that allows users to toggle drive modes, select ambient cabin themes, and adjust volume via press-and-turn inputs. The 30 Million Selection Edition adds optional features such as a 540° transparent chassis view and a Bluetooth digital key. Practicality is enhanced by 40:60 split-folding rear seats that fold completely flat, expanding boot capacity to over 1,500 litres.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Advanced driver assistance represents a major leap forward for the new-generation Tayron L. The SUV is equipped with the IQ.Pilot high-level ADAS suite, utilizing a 9V5R12U hardware setup comprising 9 cameras, 5 millimetre-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The system supports eight core driving assistance functions, including predictive adaptive cruise control and intelligent obstacle avoidance, currently covering 90% of urban and 95% of highway driving scenarios. According to FAW-Volkswagen's three-step autonomous driving roadmap, full all-scenario coverage is slated for rollout in 2026. Basic Level 2 features like ACC Adaptive Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking come standard across all variants. The Tayron L PHEV is equipped with the Xingyun smart driving system, which includes Highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), multi-storey memory parking (up to 2 km), 100-metre reverse tracking assist, and remote parking assist.

In terms of passive safety, the Tayron features a high-strength steel cage body structure and comes standard with multiple airbags across the lineup, maintaining the reassuring, robust crashworthiness expected of German engineering.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Tayron remains FAW-Volkswagen's best-selling SUV model. Throughout 2025, the Tayron nameplate registered sales of 187,000 units, ranking first in the ICE mid-size SUV segment. In October 2025, monthly sales reached 17,721 units; November 2025 deliveries stood at 17,015 units, taking cumulative annual sales to 163,905 units. For the full year of 2025, the Tayron accounted for approximately 19% of FAW-Volkswagen's total brand volume.

Media consensus notes that the Tayron's key strengths lie in its solid and engaging German chassis tuning, the proven reliability of the EA888 powertrain, and the enduring quality reputation of the Volkswagen brand. The 2026 Tayron L effectively addresses previous shortcomings in digital tech and cabin space through its Snapdragon 8155 smart cockpit, IQ.Pilot ADAS suite, and stretched wheelbase. Meanwhile, the addition of the Tayron L PHEV broadens the electrified lineup—boasting a 143 km pure electric range, 1,439 km combined range, and a competitive pre-sale price starting from RM174,900, offering family buyers an attractive, tax-incentivised German plug-in hybrid alternative. On the downside, making the spare tyre optional has sparked some debate; and against the relentless influx of new energy vehicles, the Tayron faces an increasingly competitive marketplace as a traditional ICE SUV. Nevertheless, as FAW-Volkswagen's cornerstone product in the mid-size segment, the Tayron sustains its firm leadership among joint-venture rivals powered by the dual strengths of "German quality and intelligent evolution".
