Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) communication is one of the core communication modes in the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) ecosystem. It refers to the process where vehicles exchange data with network platforms such as cloud servers and traffic management centres via cellular networks (such as 4G and 5G).
If V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) is a short-range "direct conversation" between vehicles, V2N acts more like connecting a vehicle to a centralized "cloud brain".
Broad coverage range: Leveraging existing cellular base stations, V2N delivers wide-area coverage that far exceeds V2V (typically around 300 metres), allowing vehicles to link up with the entire urban traffic network.
Cost-efficient deployment: A major advantage of V2N is its ability to utilise widely deployed 4G/5G cellular infrastructure without requiring massive investment in dedicated roadside units, making large-scale rollout highly cost-effective.
C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) technology provides two primary communication pathways for V2N:
Network communication (Uu interface): Vehicles connect to the internet via cellular base stations to upload and download data. This serves as the primary route for V2N to handle long-distance, high-capacity data transmission.
Direct communication (PC5 interface): Enables vehicles to communicate directly with one another or with roadside units without routing through base stations, satisfying the ultra-low latency demands of V2V and V2I scenarios as a complement to V2N.
The practical value of V2N technology is showcased across several key domains:
Enhancing road safety: Delivers cloud-based advance alerts regarding accidents, slippery roads, and roadwork zones several kilometres ahead, overcoming the physical line-of-sight limitations of standalone on-board sensors.
Optimising traffic flow: Enables dynamic route planning based on live traffic updates to bypass congestion, while syncing with traffic light data to provide green wave speed guidance, cutting down idle waiting times for a smoother drive.
Empowering intelligent mobility: Delivers beyond-line-of-sight environmental sensing for future autonomous driving; it also provides the essential technical foundation for cooperative vehicle platooning (reducing drag and improving fuel economy) and smart charging management (V2G, Vehicle-to-Grid).
