Tyre Repair Tools

2026-10-25 06:50:00

Tyre repair tools are in-car emergency equipment used to temporarily seal tyre punctures and air leaks. With the growing trend of new cars omitting spare tyres, mastering the proper use of tyre repair kits has become an essential skill for motorists.

Comparison of Main Types

Tyre repair tools currently available on the market fall mainly into the following categories, each with distinct features and application scenarios:

Type Working Principle & Operation Pros Cons & Risks
Tyre Sealant Liquid sealant is injected into the tyre via the valve stem, automatically filling and curing to seal punctures. Easiest to use; requires no wheel removal and minimal physical effort. Not recommended for long-term use; can corrode rims and TPMS sensors, disrupt wheel balancing, and damage sound-absorbing acoustic foam.
Tyre Repair Screws Specially formulated rubber screws are screwed directly into the puncture hole. No tyre removal required with minimal impact on silent tyres; slightly more tedious than sealant but still relatively effortless. Prone to slow leaks, and may dislodge while driving due to heat or centrifugal force, posing safety hazards.
Tyre Plugs / Strips A glue-coated rubber strip is forced into the puncture using an insertion tool; this is the most common roadside emergency kit on the market. No tyre removal required. Requires considerable physical effort; insertion requires reaming and enlarging the puncture, which damages the internal tyre cord ply layers, compromising repair integrity and making it the least recommended emergency fix.
Mushroom Plugs / Patches The tyre interior is buffed before applying an internal patch, or a mushroom plug is inserted from the inside out (requires tyre dismounting). Professional repair; serves as a permanent, highly reliable solution. Unsuitable for roadside emergencies; requires tyre-changing machines and buffing tools, making it impossible to perform by the roadside.

Precautions When Using Tyre Sealant

If your vehicle is equipped with tyre sealant as its emergency kit, take note of the following:

  • Limitation on puncture size: Typically suitable only for punctures on the tread not exceeding 6mm in diameter. Sidewall damage or faulty valve stems cannot be repaired.

  • Post-application driving: Drive immediately for a short distance (e.g. at least 10 km) to allow the sealant to coat evenly. Visit a professional tyre shop as soon as possible for cleaning and permanent repair, as sealant is purely a temporary emergency measure.

  • Speed limit: Keep vehicle speed strictly below 80km/h after application.

Summary & Recommendations

The primary role of tyre repair tools is strictly for emergencies. Regardless of the tool used, a thorough inspection and proper repair at a professional tyre workshop must follow as soon as possible. If you are unfamiliar with using these kits or if the damage is in a critical area (such as the sidewall), calling for roadside assistance is the safer option.
