Toyota Voxy

2026-09-28 12:40:00

Model Overview

The Toyota Voxy is a mid-sized MPV produced by Toyota, serving as the sportier counterpart in the brand's Noah/Voxy twin-model strategy. Since its debut in 2001, the nameplate has remained a prominent contender in the Japanese MPV segment, primarily catering to larger families and executive transport needs, with its commodious cabin, dual powered sliding doors, and versatile seating configurations serving as key selling points. Structurally identical to its sister model, the Noah, the Voxy distinguishes itself through a sharper, more aggressive styling ethos, whereas the Noah adopts a more understated, executive demeanour. The current fourth-generation model made its Japanese debut in January 2022. While not officially introduced to the Chinese market via authorised distributor channels, it has arrived in limited numbers via grey/parallel importers. Key rivals include fellow Japanese mid-sized MPVs like the Nissan Serena and Honda Stepwgn.

Design Language

The fourth-generation Voxy adopts Toyota's latest design language, setting a clear visual distinction from the Noah. Up front, it features an imposing trapezoidal front radiator grille with black honeycomb mesh inserts, flanked by sharply sculpted LED headlamp clusters to deliver a seamless, integrated aesthetic. Vertical LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and aerodynamic air vents flank the front bumper, accentuating its youthful and sporty flair. The side profile features clean, upright lines, complemented by a low-rake A-pillar to optimise outward visibility, while dual powered sliding doors are fitted as standard across the range. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar spans across the tailgate, with taillamp clusters extending downwards on both sides. In terms of dimensions, the Voxy measures 4,695 mm long, 1,730 mm wide, and 1,895 mm tall (FF) / 1,925 mm (4WD), with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

Inside, the Voxy features a highly practical, user-centric cabin design. The floating centre console houses a 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display (higher variants) or an 8-inch unit (lower variants), complemented by a 7-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster on higher-spec trims. Ample storage compartments and cupholders are integrated beneath the centre dashboard, while a walk-through aisle between the front seats facilitates easy cabin mobility. The seats are upholstered in either durable fabric or synthetic leather, available in multiple interior colour schemes such as beige and black. A three-spoke multi-function steering wheel comes standard.

Powertrain Performance

The fourth-generation Voxy offers two powertrain options:

  • Petrol Variant: Powered by a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine (model M20A-FKS), churning out a maximum power of 125 kW (approx. 170 PS) at 6,600 rpm and 202 Nm of peak torque from 4,500 to 4,900 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels (FWD) or all four wheels (4WD) via a Direct Shift-CVT with 10-speed virtual ratios. Combined WLTC fuel consumption is rated at 6.7–7.0 L/100 km.

  • Hybrid Variant (HEV) : Powered by a self-charging hybrid system pairing a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine (model 2ZR-FXE) with an electric motor. The internal combustion engine produces 72 kW (approx. 98 PS) and 142 Nm, while the electric motor generates 70 kW (approx. 95 PS) and 185 Nm, delivering a total combined system output of 103 kW (approx. 140 PS). Power is routed through an E-CVT electronic continuously variable transmission, available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and E-Four electric all-wheel-drive configurations. Combined WLTC fuel consumption is an impressive 5.0–5.5 L/100 km.

Both powertrain options comply with Japan's stringent fuel efficiency and emission standards.

Chassis and Handling

The Voxy is underpinned by Toyota's TNGA (GA-C) platform, representing its first application in a mid-sized MPV. Benefiting from a low centre of gravity, enhanced torsional rigidity, and a finely tuned suspension setup, the platform delivers commendable handling stability and ride comfort for an MPV. Suspension comprises front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam (FF models) or double wishbone setup (4WD models). Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system, while braking duties are handled by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. Hybrid variants also benefit from active noise cancellation and acoustic laminated glass for enhanced cabin refinement. The E-Four AWD variant employs an independent rear-mounted electric motor, providing enhanced traction on wet roads and light off-pavement surfaces.

Cabin and Features

The Voxy is available in both 7-seater and 8-seater configurations. The second row features individual Captain seats (7-seater) or a three-passenger bench (8-seater), both offering fore-and-aft sliding and reclining adjustments. The third-row seats can be folded and stowed into the floor sides, creating a completely flat luggage area. Standard boot capacity stands at approximately 287 litres with all 7 seats in place, expanding to over 1,000 litres with the third row folded down. Dual power sliding doors with a wide 730 mm aperture provide seamless ingress and egress, with range-topping variants gaining a hands-free powered tailgate with kick-sensor activation.

In terms of comfort and convenience, the MPV comes equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control (tri-zone optional), an independent rear air-conditioning control panel, rear window sunshades, and heated front seats. Higher-spec models can be specified with a rear-seat entertainment system featuring dual 11.6-inch displays. Infotainment is handled by Toyota's latest Smart Connect multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud navigation, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and voice control functions. The standard six-speaker sound system can also be upgraded to a 10-speaker JBL premium audio setup.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The Voxy comes standard across all variants with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Key TSS features include:

  • Pre-Collision System (PCS): with pedestrian, bicyclist, and intersection collision avoidance support

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) (Full-Speed Range)

  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

  • Adaptive High-beam System (AHS)

  • Traffic Sign Assist (TSA)

Furthermore, top-tier variants add Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor, and intelligent parking assist functions. In terms of passive safety, the Voxy features Toyota's high-strength GOA body structure, complete with a comprehensive multi-airbag system encompassing dual front airbags, front side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, and a driver's knee airbag.

Market Performance and Evaluation

The Voxy and its sister model Noah remain pillar products within Japan's MPV landscape. Following the launch of the fourth-generation model, it earned widespread acclaim among Japanese buyers thanks to the handling and ride comfort improvements enabled by the TNGA platform, the frugal fuel economy of its hybrid system, and its spacious, versatile cabin packaging. In 2022, cumulative sales of the Noah/Voxy twin models surpassed 100,000 units, placing them among Japan's best-selling MPVs. Within the Japanese market demographic, the Voxy holds stronger appeal among younger families and buyers seeking a sportier aesthetic. For markets where it is not officially distributed, such as China, the Voxy trickles in via parallel import channels as a "JDM original" product, fetching prices in the region of RM250,000 to RM350,000. In comparison, the sister model Noah appeals to commercial and traditional family buyers with its more formal styling and plush appointments. However, key barriers to official entry in the Chinese market include high import duties and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations that do not conform to local right-hand traffic road regulations, making an official rollout unlikely. In contrast, left-hand-drive markets such as Southeast Asia will serve as crucial overseas target regions for the Voxy in the future.
