Toyota Vios

2026-10-09 03:00:00

The Toyota Vios is an entry-level B-segment sedan under FAW Toyota. It is an entry-level three-box sedan developed by Toyota specifically for the Asian market. In 2002, the first-generation Vios rolled off the production line, officially entering the Chinese market as FAW Toyota's first locally manufactured model. Positioned as an economical family car, the Vios places practical utility and affordability at its core, catering primarily to budget-conscious buyers who prioritise fuel efficiency and reliability. The official recommended retail price for the car ranged from approximately RM70,000 to RM110,000, with dealer discounts frequently bringing actual transaction prices for base variants down to around RM60,000. As of 2025, driven by market upgrading and the shift towards electrification in China, the Vios has officially ended domestic production.

Design Language

The Toyota Vios adopts Toyota's signature family design language. Up front, it features a prominent radiator grille with horizontal chrome slats flanked by sleek, sharp headlamp clusters, centred with the Toyota badge. Higher-spec variants come equipped with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and front fog lamps. Along the sides, a clean character line flows smoothly through the door handles toward the tail lamps. The rear styling is neat and minimalist, accented by a horizontal chrome garnish dividing the tail lamps. In terms of dimensions, the Vios measures 4,435 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. Inside, the cabin layout is geared purely towards everyday practicality, featuring an uncluttered dashboard design, with selected variants offering a two-tone black-and-white finish. Hard plastics dominate the interior trim, while top-spec variants gain a standalone 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire Toyota Vios lineup is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Codenamed M15A-FKS and part of Toyota's Dynamic Force engine family, this economy-focused unit was tailored specifically for entry-level models. It features Dual VVT-i variable valve timing and the Atkinson cycle, boasting a high compression ratio of 13:1. Maximum power is rated at 82 kW (around 112 PS), with peak torque ranging between 139 Nm and 148 Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox or an S-CVT automatic with an 8-speed virtual shift mode. This powertrain is tuned primarily for seamless power delivery and outstanding fuel economy, and aided by Dual VVT-i alongside the TOYOTA SMART STOP intelligent idle stop-start system, the Vios returns a combined fuel consumption figure as low as 5.03 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The Vios is constructed on Toyota's NBC platform. Suspension setup comprises front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam. The chassis is tuned primarily for ride comfort and family commuting, while the electric power steering (EPS) delivers a light and effortless steering feel. In terms of handling stability, the revised suspension keeps body roll well in check through continuous bends, with steering deadband reduced by 40% compared with the previous generation. Four-wheel disc brakes come standard across the entire range.

Cabin and Equipment

Cabin appointments on the Vios focus straightforwardly on fulfilling everyday family needs. The 9-inch touchscreen head unit on higher-tier trims supports smartphone connectivity via Baidu CarLife and WeLink. Selected high-spec variants also gain keyless entry with push-start ignition for added convenience. The seats are upholstered in fabric or combination materials. The Vios offers a generous boot capacity of approximately 476 litres, easily catering to daily family loading demands, while rear legroom sits comfortably at the class average.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Vios utilises Toyota's proprietary GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) body structure, which efficiently absorbs and disperses impact forces across the frame to minimise passenger cell deformation during a collision. Standard active safety features across the range include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control System (TCS), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). For passive safety, dual front airbags are fitted as standard, with selected high-grade models adding a driver's knee airbag. In terms of advanced driver assistance, the equipment list remains basic, centring mainly around vehicle stability control and core active safety systems.

Market Performance and Reception

Since making its debut in China back in 2002, the Toyota Vios has won over legions of buyers with its accessible pricing, stellar fuel economy, robust durability, and low maintenance costs. By 2025, cumulative sales of the Vios in China had surpassed the one-million-unit milestone. However, as the Chinese automotive market shifted towards higher-tier segments and rapid new energy vehicle (NEV) adoption, the subcompact petrol sedan market faced immense pressure. Sales of the Vios tumbled from tens of thousands of units annually during its peak down to just a handful of units per month. In 2025, FAW Toyota officially confirmed that the Vios had ceased domestic production. Having served the Chinese market for over two decades, the classic Toyota Vios has left an indelible mark on the entry-level family car segment with its ultra-low cost of ownership and proven reliability, rightfully representing a generation's quintessential "first car."
