Model Overview

The Toyota RAV4 is a cornerstone C-segment SUV in Toyota's global lineup and stands as one of the best-selling SUV nameplates worldwide. As a pioneer of the urban crossover segment, the RAV4 has long earned the trust of global buyers through its well-rounded packaging, rock-solid reliability, and exceptional practicality.
In the Chinese domestic market, the RAV4 is produced and distributed by FAW Toyota under the official name "RAV4 Rongfang". In 2025, the RAV4 underwent a complete generational redesign into its sixth iteration. Currently on sale are the 2026 model year variants, offering a total of six trim levels with official retail pricing ranging between RM169,800 and RM228,800, while limited-time promotional offers bring the starting price down to RM151,800. The new model is available in three powertrain options: 2.0L naturally aspirated petrol, 2.0L Dual Engine hybrid, and 2.5L Dual Engine hybrid. Its primary rivals include CKD/joint-venture C-segment SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Nissan X-Trail.
Design Language
The sixth-generation RAV4 Rongfang introduces an all-new design language, shifting its overall aesthetic from the previous soft, family-oriented look to a rugged, outdoor-inspired stance. Drawing styling cues from Toyota's hardcore off-roaders like the Land Cruiser Prado and Sequoia, the new model exudes a significantly more muscular road presence.
Front End: Features a gloss black polygonal radiator grille paired with C-shaped split LED headlamp clusters and dual-tier daytime running lights (DRLs), delivering an aggressive visual impact.
Side Profile: Characterised by squarer, more upright lines that ditch traditional swage lines in favour of chunky black wheel arch cladding and a floating roof effect, evoking a strong off-road vibe.
Rear End: Forgoes a conventional full-width light bar, opting instead for a high-gloss black garnish bridging both tail lamp assemblies, which, paired with a robust rear bumper, enhances horizontal width and visual identity.
Dimensions: Measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height, with a 2,690 mm wheelbase. While overall dimensions remain close to its predecessor, its updated proportions give it a wider, more planted stance.
The cabin has received a comprehensive overhaul. The cockpit is fitted with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster alongside a 15.6-inch floating central infotainment display (14-inch on entry-level variants). The infotainment system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor for seamless operational fluidity. In addition, leather upholstery and an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat are now standard across the range, replacing the previous fabric trim to significantly elevate perceived cabin quality.
Powertrain & Performance
The 2026 RAV4 Rongfang offers three distinct powertrains, catering to buyers looking for both conventional petrol reliability and high-efficiency hybrid performance.
2.0L Naturally Aspirated Petrol: Powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine producing 126 kW (171 PS) and 206 Nm of torque, paired with a Direct-Shift CVT with 10 virtual ratios. WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at around 6.4 L/100 km.
2.0L Dual Engine Hybrid: Delivers a total system output of 144 kW, with the petrol engine contributing 112 kW, returning an impressive combined fuel consumption of just 4.59 L/100 km.
2.5L Dual Engine Hybrid: Generates a total system output of 174 kW. The petrol engine produces 136 kW, yielding a combined powertrain output of 163 kW (222 PS) and a WLTC combined fuel economy of 4.7 L/100 km.
Notably, the 2.5L Dual Engine hybrid model completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds, striking an ideal balance between punchy acceleration and remarkable fuel economy. Thanks to ample fuel tank capacities, all variants are capable of delivering a total driving range exceeding 1,000 km.
Chassis & Handling
Underpinned by Toyota's TNGA-K architecture, the sixth-generation RAV4 Rongfang benefits from a lower centre of gravity and improved torsional rigidity. The suspension setup comprises front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones. While retaining Toyota's renowned ride comfort, the damping has been tuned for improved body control, flatter cornering, and cleaner bump absorption. The electric power steering (EPS) also offers a more direct, weighted feel than before.
Drivetrain capability remains a signature selling point. Petrol variants are equipped with a Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system, while hybrid variants feature the E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system with a dedicated rear-axle electric motor. The system can vary front-to-rear torque distribution seamlessly from 100:0 to 20:80, reacting up to three times faster than before. With a ground clearance of 205 mm and a wading depth of 500 mm, the RAV4 delivers off-tarmac capability and rough-road clearance well ahead of typical urban soft-roaders.
Cabin & Equipment
The revamped digital cockpit represents a major leap forward for the sixth-generation RAV4. Driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, the infotainment system supports multi-zone continuous voice commands, HUAWEI HiCar connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. High-spec grades further add a Head-Up Display (HUD), 64-colour ambient lighting, a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, and an integrated cabin fragrance system.
Practicality remains top-tier, with the boot offering a baseline cargo volume of 580 litres, expandable to a massive, flat 1,690 litres with the rear seats folded down. Rear occupants benefit from reclining seatbacks, dedicated rear air conditioning vents, and Type-C fast-charging ports for enhanced long-distance touring comfort.
Safety & ADAS
Safety is central to the RAV4's appeal. The full range comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of advanced driver assistance systems (TSS 3.0 on 2025 models, upgraded to the Toyota Pilot intelligent driving suite for 2026). The suite delivers full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability, featuring:
Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with Full-Speed Range
Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
Automatic High Beam (AHB)
Higher variants also include a 360-degree panoramic view monitor (PVM) and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) for added peace of mind. Passive safety is well covered with seven SRS airbags fitted as standard across all variants.
Market Performance & Verdict
The RAV4 Rongfang remains one of the most consistent sales performers in China's joint-venture SUV segment. In 2025, it recorded total annual sales of 204,100 units, capturing the top spot among joint-venture C-segment SUVs. Heading into 2026, despite intensifying rivalry from domestic New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), it maintained strong momentum with 14,662 units sold in March alone. Bolstered by bulletproof reliability and an expansive customer base, the RAV4 continues to command strong secondhand resale value in the market.
Industry commentators and owners largely agree that the sixth-generation RAV4 Rongfang has successfully resolved the previous model's shortcomings in in-car connectivity and cabin plushness. Its key strengths remain its battle-tested THS hybrid powertrain, superbly balanced all-round capabilities, and Toyota's longstanding reputation for build quality. If there is a drawback, its plug-in hybrid pure electric range trails behind some domestic NEV rivals at a similar price point. Overall, the RAV4 Rongfang continues to stand tall as the consummate, dependable all-rounder in the C-SUV market.
