Techno Classica (Techno Classica Essen)

Definition and Historical Standing
Founded in Essen, Germany, in 1989, Techno Classica is the world's leading classic car trade exhibition, widely recognised within the industry as the globe's largest and most international dedicated classic car showcase. While the inaugural edition was projected to draw just 15,000 visitors, actual turnout more than doubled expectations, setting off decades of sustained expansion. Visitor numbers broke the 100,000 mark for the first time in 1992 and reached 201,000 in 2016, drawing 1,250 exhibitors from over 30 countries along with more than 2,700 classic cars. Positioned as the "World Classic Car Exhibition", Techno Classica stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Rétromobile Paris and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as a pivotal landmark of global classic car culture.

Major Transformation in 2026: Techno Classica Salon
The 35th edition in 2025 marked the final outing of Techno Classica in Essen, with the show brand subsequently merging with Retro Classics. From 24 to 27 September 2026, the event will run under the moniker "TECHNO CLASSICA SALON" at Messe Dortmund , ushering in a fresh chapter for this iconic classic car gathering. Organiser SIHA has made it clear that the rebrand and venue relocation do not signal an end, but rather "carry forward 35 editions of proven success under the refined framework of the World Classic Car Salon". The exhibition floor has been recalibrated to 50,000 square metres, adopting a more tightly curated, premium exhibition strategy.

Core Highlights of the 2026 Showcase
The 2026 showcase revolves around several landmark milestones: the 70th anniversary of the Citroën ID, the 70th anniversary of Bugatti Club Deutschland, the Maserati Centenary, and 125 years of Opel sports models. Special feature displays include the 175th anniversary of Karmann (curated by DEUVET), a dedicated estate car showcase by Mercedes-Benz IG, as well as a dedicated feature on rare commercial vehicle models.

Among the participating vehicles, Belgian specialist dealer Oldtimerfarm is fielding a fleet of 15 Ferraris, headlined by three units of the Testarossa and three units of the 550 Maranello. SGS Styling Garage is showcasing the Mercedes W 201-based "City Fun" project, a bespoke Shooting Brake derived from the 126 series, alongside CLK DTM and Evo 2 DTM-spec custom builds. The Saab booth presents an innovative curatorial concept under the "Saab Zentrale Essen" banner, displaying the Saab 96 V4 side-by-side with the Ford Taunus P5 to highlight the technical lineage of the V4 engine, alongside an ultra-rare 1989 Saab 900i 5-door.

Exhibition Layout and Highlights
Techno Classica Salon retains its signature 21-zone layout, encompassing: Automotive Industry (manufacturer heritage displays), Trade Centre (active trading of over 2,700 classic vehicles), Spare Parts and Tools (the world's largest inventory of classic parts), Services, Insurance and Financing, Automotive Literature and Automobilia, Car Clubs and Interest Groups (complimentary booth space provided to clubs since the first edition), Live Restoration Demonstrations, Historic Motorsport, Model Cars, Modern Classics and Future Classics, Youngtimers and Custom Builds, Art, Watches and Lifestyle, Open-Air Marketplace, as well as Motorcycles, Boats, Commercial Vehicles and Aviation.

Ticketing and Visitor Information
Ticket rates for the 2026 exhibition are priced at: €25 for standard adult day passes, €18 for concession holders (students and persons with disabilities), €14 for youth passes (ages 8–14), and €65 for family packages (2 adults + 3 children), with complimentary entry for children under 11. The exhibition runs from Thursday, 24 September to Sunday, 27 September, opening from 9:00 am to 6:00–7:00 pm from Thursday through Saturday, with Sunday serving as the final day.

Cultural Significance
The distinct appeal of Techno Classica Salon lies in its twin pillars of trade and heritage. It serves both as a central global marketplace for classic vehicle transactions—with over 2,700 cars on offer—and as a prestigious stage for factory heritage divisions to showcase their historical pedigree. Enthusiast clubs play a pivotal role at the exhibition; since the first edition in 1989, the organisers have provided complimentary exhibition space for all non-factory club booths and established the "Club Grand Prix" to award the most creative stand designs. This enduring commitment to the grassroots motoring community ensures that, beyond commercial success, Techno Classica consistently maintains a close, authentic connection with the grassroots ecosystem of classic car culture.
