THAIRUNG (Thai Rung Union Car Public Co., Ltd.) is the only local automotive manufacturing brand in Thailand with independent R&D capabilities that has gone public. The brand was established in 1967, with headquarters in Bangkok. THAIRUNG's business logic is highly differentiated: it does not manufacture chassis in the traditional sense, but utilizes the high-reliability chassis of mainstream brands (such as Toyota Hilux Revo, Isuzu D-Max) for secondary in-depth development to create specialized vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles (MPV), and military vehicles with a rugged off-road style. In 2026, THAIRUNG occupies an important position in the Southeast Asian rugged off-road and government special vehicle market with its flagship series TR Transformer II and the newly launched TR Transformer III, and is known as "Thailand's Land Rover/Hummer".

History

THAIRUNG's history represents a leap in the Thai automotive industry from parts assembly to independent brand design.

Startup Phase (1967-1994): Initially established under the name Thai Motor (Thai Motor Corporation), it primarily provided assembly services for brands such as Leyland, Isuzu, and Toyota in the early days.

Brand Establishment and Listing (1994): Officially renamed Thai Rung Union Car and listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1994, it began launching independently designed body modification products under the "TR" brand.

Rugged Transformation Phase (2010-2020): The brand precisely entered the rugged off-road niche market, launched the TR Transformer series based on Toyota Hilux. With its highly visual mecha-style design, it established high recognition in the Southeast Asian market.

Intelligent and New Energy Transformation (2025-2026): In 2026, with the deepening of Thailand's "EV 3.5/4.0" policy, THAIRUNG began exploring the integration of hybrid and pure electric solutions on existing rugged chassis. In March 2026, the brand released the mid-term evolution model of TR Transformer at the Bangkok International Motor Show and showcased its first hybrid patrol car prototype designed specifically for military and police.

Product Portfolio

THAIRUNG's products are known for "extreme versatility", with strong derivation capabilities for single model types.

TR Transformer II Series: The core sales pillar of the brand in 2026, based on the Toyota Hilux Revo platform. The series offers 5-seat, 7-seat, 9-seat, and even 11-seat versions. Among them, the 2026 Transformer II is equipped with 2.4L and 2.8L turbocharged diesel engines, featuring a "Hummer-esque" styling and Toyota-level reliability, becoming the top choice for high-end enthusiasts and adventure lovers.

TR Transformer III (2026 Model): The new generation flagship officially launched in 2026, with a more avant-garde and aggressive design style, positioned as an "All-Terrain Luxury Armored SUV". This model enhances the luxury feel of the interior and intelligent driving interaction technology.

TR MUV4 (Military/Special Vehicle): Multi-purpose vehicles customized for the Royal Thai Army and government departments, supporting bulletproof armor customization and communication command equipment installation, widely used in special fields such as disaster relief and border patrol.

TR Traveller: Thailand's first local brand minibus developed based on Isuzu chassis, serving medium and short-distance passenger transport and tourism shuttle.

Market Performance

In 2026, THAIRUNG maintains extremely high brand loyalty in its home market of Thailand. Despite the fierce assault from Chinese electric vehicle brands (such as BYD, Great Wall) in the city car market, THAIRUNG's position in off-road and government procurement areas remains solid. As of May 2026, the TR Transformer series is priced in Thailand between 1.57 million and 1.99 million Thai Baht. Data reflects that THAIRUNG is successfully transforming towards "high-end personalized customization", with single-vehicle profit margins far higher than ordinary urban SUVs. In addition, THAIRUNG's export orders grew significantly in Q1 2026, particularly in the Middle East and Africa regions, where its high cost-performance "bulletproof shell + Japanese 3-electric/Chassis" solution is highly competitive.

Technology and Innovation

THAIRUNG's core competitiveness lies in "System Integration" and "Extreme Environment Adaptation":

Reconfigured Body Engineering: THAIRUNG possesses advanced sheet metal stamping and mold manufacturing capabilities, capable of redeveloping all-steel enclosed bodies for mass-produced pickup chassis, greatly improving vehicle space utilization and protection without compromising chassis warranty.

Chassis Adaptation and Optimization: In response to changes in vehicle weight after modification, THAIRUNG co-developed an enhanced suspension system with partners to ensure the vehicle maintains excellent passability even under full load weight (such as 11-seat status).

Multi-field Technology Integration: The 2026 model integrates the latest "Intelligent Panoramic Perception" system, specifically optimized for off-road blind spots, and supports satellite communication module embedding.

Hybrid/Pure Electric Modification Solutions: Relying on Thailand's new energy industry chain, THAIRUNG developed pure electric power pack replacement solutions for specific operating scenarios, helping government fleets achieve low-carbon transformation.

Global Presence

THAIRUNG's overseas strategy focuses on "professional domain radiation". In 2026, the brand not only exports complete vehicles directly to Southeast Asian countries (such as Laos, Cambodia) but also plans to establish agencies in Malaysia. At the same time, the brand actively leverages its advantages in the metal stamping field to become a supply chain partner for multiple global automakers in the ASEAN region. At the 2026 Global Defense and Special Vehicle Exhibition, THAIRUNG appeared frequently, aiming to push its "Thai-style ruggedness" into the broader international security and special transport market.

Future Outlook

THAIRUNG is committed to becoming the "leading multi-purpose intelligent mobility solution provider in ASEAN". In the next three years, the brand will focus on promoting the full electrification process of the TR Transformer series, and plans to launch a modular multi-purpose vehicle platform based on independent skateboard chassis in 2027. With the mass production of TR Transformer III in 2026, THAIRUNG will not only continue to safeguard its pride as a "national brand", but will also win dignity for the Thai automotive industry in the competitive new energy era with its unique hardcore industrial aesthetics.
