2026-10-05 05:20:00

Model Overview

The Subaru Crosstrek is a compact crossover SUV from Japanese carmaker Subaru, slotted between a B-segment and C-segment SUV, and stands as one of the brand's best-selling models globally. The Crosstrek traces its lineage back to the Subaru XV—in 2012, Subaru launched the XV based on the Impreza hatchback, carving out a distinct crossover SUV segment. In September 2022, Subaru officially debuted the all-new Crosstrek as the unified global successor to the XV. As of 2026, the 2026 Crosstrek on sale was officially launched in the Chinese market in April 2026. In terms of dimensions, the China-spec model measures 4,495 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,600 mm tall, with a 2,670 mm wheelbase. Three variants are on offer for the 2026 model year in China, with official retail prices ranging from RM199,800 to RM230,800. In the US market, the 2026 Crosstrek is available in seven variants—Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Wilderness, and Hybrid—with prices starting from USD 26,995.

Design Language

The Crosstrek nameplate is a portmanteau of "CROSSOVER" and "TREKKING", encapsulating its positioning of offering freedom without compromise between urban commutes and rugged terrains. Styling-wise, the 2026 Crosstrek embraces the brand's latest design philosophy, sporting a more distinctive and rugged demeanour. The front end is dominated by a prominent hexagonal radiator grille, flanked by body-coloured trim pieces that flow outward from the emblem into the headlamp clusters. The sleek, quasi-triangular LED headlamps are narrower and sharper than before, making this the first Subaru model to feature LED cornering lamps. The front bumper incorporates chunky C-shaped black protective cladding alongside circular LED fog lamps. In profile, the car boasts pronounced, angular wheel arch mouldings, complemented by gunmetal grey side mirrors and roof rails. For 2026, an exclusive new exterior shade, "Dune Pearl Grey", has also been introduced.

Inside the Cabin, the Crosstrek adopts Subaru's modern multi-tiered dashboard layout, anchored by a prominent 11.6-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen as the digital centrepiece. The instrument cluster retains classic dual analogue dials paired with a 4.2-inch multi-info display. The cabin blends carbon-fibre-style trim, piano black accents, and soft-touch matte plastics to deliver a well-crafted, tactile finish.

Powertrain & Performance

In China, the entire 2026 Crosstrek lineup is powered by a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated Boxer 4-cylinder petrol engine (FB25-DI). Featuring direct injection and a 12.0:1 compression ratio, it produces a maximum output of 124 kW (169 PS) at 5,000–5,800 rpm and peak torque of 252 Nm at 3,800 rpm. Power is transferred via a Lineartronic longitudinal chain-driven CVT (with an 8-speed manual mode). It returns a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 7.22 L/100 km, achieves a top speed of 203 km/h, and comes with a 63-litre fuel tank.

Overseas markets benefit from a wider powertrain selection. The US-spec petrol model comes standard with a 2.5-litre 180 hp Boxer unit; the Hybrid variant pairs a 2.5-litre Boxer engine with a new-generation series-parallel hybrid system for a total system output of 194 hp. The off-road-oriented Wilderness variant is powered by the 2.5-litre 180 hp engine coupled with revised gearing.

Ride & Handling

Built upon the Subaru Global Platform (SGP), the Crosstrek features a Full Inner Frame construction with the extensive application of structural adhesives, significantly reducing NVH levels and vibrations on the move. Suspension duties are handled by front MacPherson struts and a rear double-wishbone independent setup. It boasts a tight minimum turning radius of just 5.35 metres. Unladen ground clearance stands at an impressive 220 mm, delivering class-leading rough-road capability.

Underneath, Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (S-AWD) system with active torque split comes standard across the board. Paired with the Boxer engine's inherently low centre of gravity, it ensures exceptional traction and stability over slippery roads and light trails. The vehicle also features the dual-mode X-MODE system as standard, which tailors power delivery and traction control to varying terrains. The rugged Wilderness variant elevates ground clearance further to 9.3 inches (approx. 236 mm) and rides on all-terrain tyres.

Cabin Appointments & Equipment

The centrepiece of the interior is an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. SI-DRIVE (Subaru Intelligent Drive) is standard across all variants, offering selectable drive modes such as Sport, Intelligent, and Comfort. Convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. The flagship trim is equipped with the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) , utilizing a dedicated camera to monitor driver alertness and fatigue. A premium sound system is also available. In terms of practicality, folding down the rear seats expands cargo capacity to 1,261 litres.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety remains a cornerstone of the Crosstrek. On the passive safety front, the SUV is fitted with 9 SRS airbags as standard, comprising dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and rear side airbags. The body shell is built around Subaru's high-tensile ring-shaped reinforcement frame.

Active safety is bolstered by the standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology (Advanced EyeSight 4.0). In addition to stereo cameras, the system incorporates a wide-angle monocular camera to broaden the field of view at junctions, significantly improving the detection of pedestrians and cyclists in blind spots. Key features include Pre-Collision Braking (PCB), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC, 0–180 km/h), Lane Centring Control / Lead Vehicle Follow Steer, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Lane Departure Prevention. The 2026 model adds the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) —if the system senses no driver steering input over an extended period, it issues audible and visual warnings, brings the vehicle to a safe stop, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights. Upper-spec variants further gain Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Autonomous Emergency Steering.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Subaru Crosstrek's global sales showcase a distinct market divide. In North America, it is Subaru's undisputed best-seller—clocking 191,724 units in the US in 2025, up 5.5% year-on-year to set an all-time annual sales record. In October 2025, the Crosstrek led the brand's sales charts for the sixth consecutive month with 16,284 units sold. Its stellar durability is well documented—97% of Crosstreks sold over the last decade are still on the road today.

Conversely, in the Chinese market, the brand faces an uphill battle. Subaru delivered just 3,635 units in China throughout 2024, with figures sliding further to around 2,580 units in 2025. Even as Subaru's global star performer, the Crosstrek has struggled to reverse the brand's fortunes in China. Industry observers attribute this to low brand awareness, a slim product portfolio, slow electrification progress, and premium CBU import pricing.

Within its segment, the Crosstrek goes up against compact rivals like the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Mazda CX-30. The Crosstrek's core strengths lie in its Boxer engine and permanent AWD mechanical package, generous 220 mm ground clearance, genuine off-road capability, and the robust EyeSight 4.0 safety suite. On the flip side, its 169 PS output feels modest against turbo or hybrid rivals, its cabin tech remains somewhat conservative, and the brand's market footprint in China continues to shrink. Nonetheless, as a crossover that effortlessly bridges city driving with outdoor adventure, the Crosstrek retains a loyal global following built on Subaru's engineering heritage and bulletproof reliability.
