Smart glass (Smart Glass / Switchable Glass / Electrochromic Glass) is an intelligent optical glass material engineered to reversibly alter its light transmittance or colour in response to ambient light intensity, surrounding temperature, or manual electrical inputs. In modern automotive engineering, it is widely fitted to panoramic glass roofs, side windows, and rear-view mirrors of premium vehicle models. Beyond automatically or manually dimming under scorching sunlight to block glare and solar heat, smart glass can also revert to full transparency on overcast days or at night—striking the perfect balance between an airy, expansive view, passenger privacy, and cabin thermal comfort.
Automotive-grade smart glass technology is primarily divided into two core categories: electrochromic and photochromic:
Electrochromic Technology (Electrochromic Glass):
This is currently the most prevalent technology applied in high-end automotive glass roofs. The glass comprises multi-layered, nano-scale electrochromic thin films (such as tungsten oxide) sandwiched between glass panes. When a low-voltage DC current is applied via the infotainment screen or physical switches, charged ions migrate into the electrochromic layer under the electric field, altering the glass's visible light and infrared absorption and reflection properties. This tinting process is fully controllable, allowing stepless dimming from crystal clear to a deep, opaque tint within seconds to tens of seconds.
Photochromic & PDLC Polymer Types (Photochromic & PDLC Suspended Particle Devices):
Photochromic glass automatically adjusts its tint level based on UV radiation intensity in sunlight (the harsher the sun, the darker the glass). Meanwhile, another widespread dimmable alternative—Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film interlayer—realigns microscopic liquid crystal droplets upon electrical energisation, allowing instantaneous transitions between an opaque, frosted privacy mode and total clarity.
Do not assume that an electrochromic laminated glass roof can be easily shattered during emergency egress following a severe side-impact collision or rollover incident (Prohibiting Misconceptions Regarding Emergency Escape Through Smart Roofs):
To comply with strict automotive safety standards as well as acoustic and thermal insulation requirements, smart glass roofs are fundamentally engineered as robust composite laminated glass. Striking the centre of the glass roof with conventional force in an emergency is ineffective, as its internal structure—comprising multiple conductive coatings, resin damping interlayers, and toughened glass substrates—provides exceptional penetration resistance. If the doors cannot be opened and roof egress is necessary, occupants must use a dedicated emergency window breaker to strike the four outer corners of the glass roof with maximum concentrated force.
Never splice into or overload the dedicated power circuits of the smart glass and roof dimming control module when modifying onboard electrical systems or retrofitting high-draw aftermarket accessories (Prohibiting Overloading Smart Glass Circuits with Aftermarket Electronics):
Electrochromic glass is extremely sensitive to input voltage and current stability. Improper and unauthorised wire tapping is strictly forbidden; electrical fluctuations or short circuits caused by aftermarket accessories can burn out the smart glass control module, resulting in total system failure (the glass permanently stuck in one tint state). In severe cases, it can cause the roof wiring harness to overheat and melt, posing a severe electrical and fire hazard.
