Semi-Trailer

2026-10-21 02:50:00

A semi-trailer refers to a trailer whose axles are positioned behind the vehicle’s centre of gravity (when uniformly loaded) and is equipped with a coupling device that transfers horizontal and vertical loads to the prime mover. A semi-trailer has no motive power of its own and must be coupled to a prime mover via a kingpin, with the prime mover supporting a portion of its front-end weight. Compared to full drawbar trailers, semi-trailers are widely used in long-haul freight transport and serve as the backbone of trunk-route logistics.

Structural Composition

A semi-trailer mainly comprises the following components: Chassis Frame (a structural framework welded from longitudinal beams and crossmembers, engineered for load-bearing cargo); Superstructure (dropsides, cargo cages, box van bodies, etc., configured according to cargo requirements); Kingpin (the vital coupling component linking the prime mover and trailer whilst handling pulling forces); Suspension System (connecting the chassis frame to the axles to transfer loads and absorb road shocks, commonly available in leaf spring and air suspension setups); Running Gear (axles, rims, and tyres, responsible for load support and rolling motion); Landing Gear (Support Legs) (used to support the front of the trailer once uncoupled from the prime mover).

Main Classifications

Semi-trailers are categorised into various types based on body design and operational application:

  • Stake / Cage Semi-Trailer: Features a fenced cargo bed structure, primarily utilised for transporting agricultural produce and other high-volume, light-density goods.

  • Box / Van Semi-Trailer: Ideal for carrying moisture-sensitive and high-value cargo, such as home appliances, consumer electronics, and textiles.

  • Low Loader Semi-Trailer: Engineered with a low deck height, low centre of gravity, and exceptional stability, primarily used for hauling heavy machinery, plant equipment, and oversized cargo.

  • Container Semi-Trailer: Purpose-built for hauling shipping containers, available in flatbed and skeletal chassis configurations.

  • Tanker Semi-Trailer: Features a specialised tank vessel for transporting liquids, chemicals, and dry bulk materials.

  • Tipper Semi-Trailer: Features a hydraulic tipping bed for rapid unloading, suited for bulk materials such as coal, ores, sand, and construction aggregates.

Advantages and Applications

Compared with conventional rigid lorries, semi-trailers significantly enhance the overall economic efficiency of road haulage. Transport operational efficiency can increase by 30% to 50%, operating costs are reduced by 30% to 40%, and fuel consumption drops by 20% to 30%. Driven by operational versatility and heavy payload capacity, semi-trailers are widely favoured across the logistics and freight industry; their fleet numbers have surged over the past two decades, cementing their role as the primary workhorse of road freight transport.
