Seat Memory

2026-10-18 09:00:00

Automotive seat memory is an electronic comfort and convenience feature designed to automatically store and recall personalised seat adjustment settings for drivers or passengers. Typically synchronised with power-adjustable seats, steering columns, and wing mirrors, it records precise spatial coordinates and angular data via the Body Control Module (BCM) or a dedicated seat ECU. This allows drivers of differing statures to seamlessly recall their preferred seating postures at the touch of a button when taking turns behind the wheel.

Core Working Principle and Technical Characteristics

At the heart of seat memory is the synergy of position sensor feedback, electronic coordinate storage, and precision multi-motor coordination:

Hall Sensors and Position Feedback: Each adjustment motor within the electric seat (governing fore-and-aft slide, backrest recline, cushion height, tilt, etc.) is typically fitted with a Hall sensor or potentiometer. Once the user sets their driving posture and presses the "Memory (M)" button followed by a numbered preset (e.g., 1, 2), the system writes the respective motor pulse counts or absolute position coordinates into the on-board memory chip.

One-Touch Linkage and Automatic Recall: When another driver alters the settings, the original driver can simply press their assigned preset button. The electronic control system will simultaneously activate the various motors, driving them precisely until all real-time positions match the stored coordinates, swiftly restoring the custom seating position within seconds.

Application Scenarios and Market Value

Seat memory is widely utilised in multi-driver family cars, premium and luxury sedans, smart new energy vehicles (NEVs), as well as on powered driver and front passenger seats across modern passenger vehicles.

This feature effectively eliminates the hassle of repeatedly readjusting the seat whenever multiple drivers share a car. Beyond elevating daily convenience and delivering a more upmarket feel, it ensures every driver immediately gains optimal ergonomic sightlines and driving posture upon stepping into the cabin, thereby indirectly enhancing overall driving safety.

Safety Guidelines and Physical Limitations

Never place objects, luggage, or allow children and pets near the under-seat area or tight gaps while the seat is in motion during automatic recall. The high-torque electric motors exert significant mechanical force; any obstruction could lead to severe pinching or crushing injuries, or cause motor burnout due to electrical overload.

Ensure that pairing conflicts between the seat memory module and the vehicle's smart key (such as UWB keys or Face ID recognition systems) are not overlooked. If an identification glitch causes the seat to automatically move into an incorrect or overly compressed position upon entry, immediately recalibrate and re-bind the user profiles and seat presets via the central infotainment touchscreen.
