Samsung Exynos Auto

Definition and Technical Positioning

Samsung Exynos Auto is a series of high-performance automotive processors developed by Samsung Electronics' System LSI Business for the automotive electronics sector, primarily catering to in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems and digital cockpits. Leveraging Samsung's advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the lineup integrates core computing units such as CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, and image signal processors (ISPs) to deliver robust computing power for multi-screen vehicle displays, immersive graphical interfaces, and AI-driven cockpit applications.

Product Iteration and Technical Evolution

The Exynos Auto family has now progressed to its third generation. The earlier Exynos Auto V9 was built on an 8nm FinFET process, featuring an 8-core Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, supporting up to six displays and 12 concurrent cameras. Its successor, the Exynos Auto V920, marked a substantial performance leap—adopting a 5nm FinFET node, its CPU was upgraded to a 10-core Cortex-A78AE, delivering a 1.7-fold performance boost over the previous generation; the graphics unit switched to an Xclipse GPU based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture, doubling graphics processing speeds; while the NPU delivers 23.1 TOPS of computing power, roughly 2.7 times that of its predecessor. The V920 also supports up to six high-resolution displays, 12 concurrent camera inputs, an integrated safety island compliant with the ASIL-B functional safety rating, as well as LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

Mass Production Applications and Industry Progress

The commercialisation of the Exynos Auto range is gathering momentum. In 2025, Samsung announced that the Exynos Auto V920 had been selected for Hyundai Motor's next-generation in-vehicle infotainment system project, marking the maiden partnership between Samsung and Hyundai Motor in the automotive semiconductor space. Towards the end of the same year, reports surfaced that Samsung had supplied its Exynos Auto V720 chip for the BMW iX3—the first production model underpinned by the Neue Klasse all-electric platform—solidifying its role as a key semiconductor partner in BMW's software-defined vehicle (SDV) initiative. The all-new BMW iX3 is slated for launch in the second half of 2026. Reports also indicated that Samsung plans to supply the higher-performance Exynos Auto V920 processor for BMW's flagship models, including the next-generation 7 Series. Prior to this, Samsung had supplied Exynos-series processors to Audi and Volkswagen in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Technical Limitations

At present, the Exynos Auto family is predominantly tailored for in-vehicle infotainment systems. With an ASIL-B functional safety rating, it is suited for infotainment and cockpit domain control rather than mission-critical ADAS or autonomous driving core control setups that demand more stringent safety compliance. Furthermore, Samsung's market share in the automotive cockpit chip segment continues to trail dominant industry players such as Qualcomm.
