Roof Box

2026-10-26 07:20:00

A roof box, also known as a roof luggage box, is an enclosed, aerodynamic storage unit mounted onto a vehicle's roof rack. It is designed primarily to solve boot space constraints during road trips, effectively adding a sizable extra boot on top of the car.

What Can It Hold? What Are Its Core Advantages?

The primary advantage of a roof box is significantly expanding cargo capacity. Mainstream capacities range between 300L and 550L, with larger units offering up to 650L or even 720L—practically matching the boot volume of a standard passenger car. This space is ideal for storing:

  • Long sporting gear such as skis and surfboards.

  • Camping tents, folding chairs, and oversized travel backpacks for road trips.

  • Excess luggage when the cabin is carrying a full load of passengers.

Compared to open roof baskets or soft cargo bags, a rigid roof box offers clear advantages:

  • Security and Dust/Weather Protection: Fitted with integrated key locks and robust outer shells typically moulded from impact-resistant composite materials (such as ABS+ASA), it resists tampering with ordinary blades while providing better privacy.

  • Lower Wind Noise: Featuring a streamlined profile, its aerodynamic drag and wind noise are far lower than irregularly shaped roof baskets or soft cargo bags, minimising the impact on overall driving refinement.

What Should You Note When Installing a Roof Box?

Fitting a roof box is not just a plug-and-play affair; several key factors need to be addressed beforehand:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: According to regulations, installing a roof box constitutes an exterior vehicle modification. If your car did not come equipped with factory-fitted roof racks, it must be officially endorsed and registered with the road transport authority after installation. It must also comply with dimension limits: the height must not exceed 0.5 metres measured from the vehicle roof, and overall height must not exceed 4 metres from the ground to the top of the box.

  2. Load-Bearing Capacity: The combined weight of the empty roof box and its contents must never exceed the dynamic roof load limit specified in the vehicle handbook (typically between 60 kg and 75 kg). Exceeding this limit severely compromises vehicle stability and driving safety. Heavy cargo should always be kept inside the vehicle, with the roof box reserved strictly for lightweight, bulky items.

  3. Fuel Consumption and Height Clearance: The added aerodynamic drag will increase fuel or electricity consumption. Additionally, the substantial increase in overall vehicle height requires caution, as it may prevent entry into multi-storey or basement car parks with clearance heights below 2 metres.

In summary, a roof box is a practical accessory that substantially enhances road trip convenience, making it ideal for group travel, heavy luggage demands, or carrying specialised outdoor equipment.
