Definition and Technical Positioning
The Renesas R-Car series is a high-performance System-on-Chip (SoC) family developed by Renesas Electronics for the automotive electronics sector, engineered specifically for ADAS and autonomous driving, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, smart cockpits, and gateway applications. Characterised by scalable hardware platforms and flexible software environments, the lineup caters to diverse requirements spanning entry-level to premium vehicle models, serving as a pivotal chip solution for central compute and multi-domain fusion in the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) era.
Technical Evolution and Product Generations
The R-Car series has evolved across several product generations. The fourth-generation (Gen 4) lineup covers a broad range of in-vehicle applications: the R-Car S4 series targets automotive gateway and domain controller setups, built on a 12nm process and integrating multi-core Arm Cortex-A55 alongside Cortex-R52 cores, whilst incorporating an RH850 MCU core for the first time for domain control management, alongside extensive interfaces such as 16 CAN FD channels and 3 2.5Gbps Ethernet switches. Meanwhile, the R-Car V4 series caters to ADAS and autonomous driving applications, delivering up to 60 TOPS of compute performance via chip expansion to support configurations from smart camera units to integrated driving and parking domain controllers.
Fifth-Generation R-Car: Multi-Domain Fusion for SDVs
The fifth-generation R-Car family represents the brand's latest technological milestone. The flagship R-Car X5H stands as the industry's first multi-domain fusion SoC built on a 3nm automotive-grade process, capable of concurrently executing multiple in-car workloads, including ADAS, IVI, and gateway systems, on a single piece of silicon. Key performance highlights include: up to 400 TOPS of AI compute, CPU performance exceeding 1,000K DMIPS (powered by 32 Arm Cortex-A720AE cores), GPU output equivalent to 4 TFLOPS, and 6 ASIL D-compliant Cortex-R52 lockstep cores. Compared to preceding 5nm architectures, power consumption is reduced by up to 35%. The SoC also supports AI and graphics scaling via chiplet technology, leveraging hardware-level isolation to run safety-critical and non-safety-critical tasks independently, thereby preventing cross-domain fault propagation.
Software Ecosystem and Production Roadmap
To complement the R-Car X5H, Renesas introduced the RoX white-box Software Development Kit (SDK), built on Linux, Android, and XEN hypervisors, whilst supporting partner operating systems including AUTOSAR, QNX, and Red Hat. The SDK integrates production-ready software stacks from industry partners such as Candera, Smart Eye, STRADVISION, and ThunderSoft, enabling end-to-end development for ADAS, Level 3/Level 4 autonomous driving, and smart cockpits. Renesas has commenced sampling for its fifth-generation silicon, with Bosch confirming the integration of the R-Car X5H into its ADAS ECU platform to address the growing demand for Level 2+ and Level 3 automated driving.
