Remote Unlock is a feature that allows car owners to unlock their vehicle doors from a distance via a mobile app or smart key, utilising cellular networks or Bluetooth technology. It addresses common pain points such as forgetting keys, accidentally locking keys inside the car, or needing to grant temporary access to others.
Remote unlock operates through an integrated system comprising a mobile app, cloud server, and an in-vehicle telematics control unit (such as a T-Box) .
Tapping the "Unlock" button in the app sends a command via the 4G/5G network to the cloud server, which then relays it to the vehicle's telematics unit. The Body Control Module (BCM) subsequently executes the unlock command. The entire sequence requires user authentication to ensure only authorised individuals can access the vehicle.
Emergency Situations: If you accidentally lock your keys inside the car or misplace them, you can unlock the doors remotely via the mobile app, preventing the hassle of getting locked out.
Time-Limited Access: Selected apps allow users to set a specific time limit for remote unlocking. For instance, if you need to grant temporary access to a replacement driver or family member, you can set a countdown timer (e.g., 10 minutes). The doors will automatically relock once the time expires, enhancing security by preventing lingering access permissions.
Everyday Convenience: Most carmakers integrate remote unlocking into their official smartphone apps as a supplement to conventional physical keys. For example, the Jaguar Remote app supports one-tap lock/unlock functions and sends mobile notifications if the vehicle is left unlocked for an extended duration.
Network Reliance: Remote unlocking generally requires a stable cellular connection. The feature may not function if the car is parked in mobile blackspots, such as basement car parks or remote rural areas.
Subscription Services: With certain brands, connected vehicle services and remote features may require a paid subscription once the complimentary trial period ends.
Security Safeguards: To prevent signal interception and cyber risks, mainstream remote unlock solutions utilise end-to-end encrypted communication protocols (such as TLS/SSL) and multi-factor authentication mechanisms to ensure robust security.
