Remote Park Assist (RPA) is an advanced intelligent driver-assistance feature. It allows the driver to wirelessly manoeuvre the vehicle from the outside via a smartphone app, a dedicated Bluetooth key, or a smart key fob, enabling the car to autonomously move forward, reverse, and steer without anyone in the cabin. Specifically engineered for common urban parking headaches—such as extremely narrow parking bays where doors cannot be opened or cramped multi-storey and basement car parks—this technology significantly enhances both convenience and safety when parking in tight spots.
The technical architecture of RPA primarily comprises exterior environmental perception sensors, electronic stability and steering control systems, a high-compute smart driving domain controller, as well as external wireless communication and human-machine interface (HMI) modules:
Multi-Sensor Fusion Spatial Modelling and Ultrasonic Detection:
When preparing to park, ultrasonic sensors arrayed around the body, 360-degree surround-view cameras, and millimetre-wave radars or LiDAR on higher-spec variants perform a real-time panoramic scan of the surroundings. Using deep algorithms, the system accurately computes the relative distances to parking bay markings, walls, pillars, and obstacles, generating a high-precision 3D spatial model on the virtual display of the external control device.
Wireless Handshake and Chassis Drive-by-Wire Execution:
Once the driver confirms the parking path on the mobile app outside the car and holds down the movement command, the instruction is transmitted in real time to the in-vehicle gateway via an encrypted Bluetooth or cellular network. The Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) then works in tandem with the Electric Power Steering (EPS), brake-by-wire system, and automatic transmission to precisely govern steering angle and braking at creep speeds, smoothly guiding the vehicle into or out of tight bays along the planned trajectory.
Prohibition of Activating RPA in Blind Spots, High Foot-Traffic Areas with Children or Pets, or Without Verifying Surroundings:
Although RPA is equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) collision mitigation, all sensor suites have field-of-view blind spots (such as low kerbs, ground bollards, or thin overhanging objects). Operating RPA while distracted, standing too far from the vehicle, or blindly pressing controls from inside a pocket is strictly prohibited. The driver must keep their finger on the activation button and maintain continuous visual supervision of the vehicle's surroundings at all times, ensuring that releasing the button immediately aborts the manoeuvre should an unexpected hazard arise.
Prohibition of Using RPA on Steep Inclines, Slippery/Icy Surfaces, Snow, or Unpaved Gravel Roads:
Adverse road conditions severely compromise tyre-to-ground traction. Handing over control to RPA on icy surfaces, snow, or steep slopes is strictly prohibited; wheel slip or ABS intervention will cause the actual driving path to deviate drastically from the calculated trajectory, significantly increasing the risk of kerbing the rims, scraping walls, or colliding with adjacent vehicles.
