RANZ

2026-05-29 17:30:01

RANZ is an independent joint venture brand launched by FAW Toyota, officially released on March 12, 2013, at the tenth-anniversary meeting of FAW Toyota. Positioned for pure electric vehicle development, the brand’s core philosophy is “Embarking on a bright and optimistic life journey and creating a humanized automotive world,” committed to providing green, environmentally friendly new energy travel solutions for Chinese consumers.

The brand logo adopts a horizontal rhombus design with a hollowed-out “N” shape inside. FAW Toyota officials stated that “N” represents “New” and “Natural,” implying the new cooperation areas between FAW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation, a future full of hope, and a green, environmentally friendly R&D direction. The raised rhombus pattern symbolizes the tightly clasped hands of both joint venture parties, representing consistent excellence and sincere cooperation.

History

The launch of the RANZ brand was a strategic layout by FAW Toyota in the new energy field.

As early as August 2008, FAW Toyota established an R&D center and successfully led the minor update project for Corolla EX in 2010, with monthly sales of the updated Corolla EX exceeding 10,000 units. To deepen the cultivation of local vehicle and parts R&D capabilities, in November 2012, FAW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation jointly established FAW Toyota Technical Development Co., Ltd., located in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area, with a planned construction land area of approximately 112,000 square meters, featuring functional zones such as design office, vehicle laboratory, parts laboratory, styling room, new energy laboratory, prototype workshop, etc., preliminarily forming product design development and new energy vehicle testing capabilities.

On March 12, 2013, FAW Toyota officially released the joint venture independent brand "RANZ" in Shanghai, English name "RANZ". Then Executive Vice President Tian Congming stated that the launch of RANZ was an important step to thank users and provide more and better products and services. In April of the same year, the first pure electric concept vehicle of RANZ made its global premiere at the Shanghai Auto Show.

In January 2014, the RANZ electric vehicle model appeared in the 255th batch of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology New Vehicle Catalog, declared model number TV7000GBEV. Declared information shows that the vehicle was built based on the Toyota Corolla EX platform and was already demonstrating operation within the region where pure electric taxis operate in Tianjin City.

Subsequently, the RANZ brand released two concept models, RF-EA1 and RF-EA2, in 2016 and 2017 respectively, neither of which achieved mass production sales.

As of 2026, the announced models under the RANZ brand include RANZ 2013 EV, RANZ RF-EA2, and RANZ RF-EA1, but none were officially mass-produced and launched to the market. In the organizational structure of the FAW Toyota Sales Headquarters, RANZ is still listed as part of the sales sequence, but it is included in the sales and after-sales service system together with Toyota domestic models, Daihatsu models, and FAW vehicles.

Product Portfolio

The product line of the RANZ brand mainly consists of three concept or declared models, none of which entered the mass production stage.

RANZ 2013 EV (Pure Electric Concept/Declared Model): The first model of the RANZ brand, the concept version was displayed at its debut during the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2013, and appeared in the MIIT New Vehicle Catalog in early 2014 under the declared model number TV7000GBEV. The body dimensions are 4,555 mm in length, 1,705 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm—identical to the 2013 Toyota Corolla EX. Declared images of the mass-production version show that the car is highly similar in appearance to the Corolla EX, with only the taillight groups being different. It is essentially a “conversion from fuel to electric” product, featuring powertrain and chassis modifications based on the Toyota 330N front-drive platform.

RANZ RF-EA1 (Pure Electric Concept Car, 2016): A concept model that made its debut at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. In terms of appearance, it adopts Toyota’s family-style V-front language, appearing more personalized and exaggerated than Toyota’s mass-produced models. The RANZ brand logo is arranged directly above the V-type grille, with the headlights connected to the grille, creating an overall style that leans towards youthfulness and sportiness. Regarding platform and technical specifications, the RF-EA1 did depart from the Corolla EX platform framework, serving essentially as a design upgrade of the previous EV concept car.

RANZ RF-EA2 (Pure Electric Concept Car, 2017): A concept model that made its global premiere at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. The car inherited the abstract design style of the RF-EA1 and introduced innovations in front-end design—a three-dimensional single-bar chrome decorative strip spans the front windshield and hood, with black glass and a silver body forming a strong contrast. The RF-EA2 cancels traditional exterior mirrors in favor of rear-view cameras, matching a hatchback coupe-style body and highly recognizable M-shaped LED taillights, presenting a strong sci-fi and futuristic feel. The car was interpreted by some media as a conceptual exploration by FAW Toyota in the pure electric field.

In summary, RANZ has never broken through the stage of “concept display” at the product matrix level. Except for a small amount of demonstration operation, the brand has not delivered any commercialized mass-produced models to private consumers.

Market Performance

The RANZ brand is basically in a "zero sales" status in the market. According to query results from multiple domestic automobile sales data platforms, as of early 2026, the RANZ brand "has no sales data at the moment". Vertical media such as Pacific Auto also label RANZ models as "Not mass-produced for sale" or "Not on the market" status.

The production capacity of the RANZ 2013 EV was strictly limited—after the 255th batch of new vehicles catalog was released in 2014, media explicitly reported "This electric vehicle model will not be put on the market in bulk, its technology stage is in the development phase, and it will demonstrate operation within the region where pure electric taxis operate in Tianjin City". This shows that RANZ EV was limited to a small number of government demonstration operation projects and did not enter commercial retail channels.

In terms of competition, RANZ has the same attributes as contemporary Honda Linc, Nissan Venucia and other joint venture independent brands, but Linc and Venucia have achieved mass production and independent development to different extents, while RANZ became a typical case of "stillborn" in the joint venture independent brand wave. Regarding consumer reviews of the RANZ brand, scattered discussions on the network mainly focus on general confusion about the brand being "rarely heard of" and "price is relatively high".

Technology and Innovation

The RANZ technical solution reflects the typical characteristics of the “policy-driven, ICE-to-EV conversion” stage of China’s new energy vehicle industry during the 2013–2014 period.

Power System: The RANZ 2013 EV adopts an all-electric drive system, equipped with a motor produced by FAW Autoparts Co., Ltd. The peak power is 70 kW (approximately 95 hp), and the top speed is 120 km/h. The energy storage device is a lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (ternary lithium) power battery, also produced by FAW Autoparts Co., Ltd., with product technology still in the development phase at the time.

Platform Architecture: RANZ uses the Toyota 330N front-drive platform (i.e., the Toyota Corolla model platform) as the basis for modification. Its approach is consistent with domestic early “fuel-to-electric” conversions—adjusting the powertrain and chassis parts while retaining the original fuel vehicle platform architecture.

Braking and Safety: The ABS system model is 89541-12470, produced by ADVICS CO., LTD., a brake system supplier under the Toyota Group.

R&D Capability: FAW Toyota Technical Development Co., Ltd. serves as the main body for RANZ’s R&D support, possessing capabilities in product design development, conventional vehicle testing, and new energy vehicle testing. In terms of technical route, the RANZ brand “uses electric vehicles as an entry point” and planned to develop other energy-saving, environmentally friendly conventional power models in the future. However, except for the display of several concept models between 2013 and 2017, the brand has not announced quantifiable breakthrough parameters for key indicators such as all-electric drive range, charging efficiency, and power performance.

Global Presence

Currently, there is no public information indicating that the RANZ brand has an overseas layout. RANZ brand vehicles have never entered the overseas market for sales, nor have R&D centers, production bases, or after-sales service networks been established overseas. Within the FAW Toyota sales system, the sales service of RANZ vehicles mainly faces the Chinese domestic market, the brand itself is positioned as a localized independent new energy brand developed for Chinese consumers, and the export sector has never been included in its strategic planning.

It needs to be pointed out that there is a large amount of "RANZ Lighting" and other non-automotive RANZ brand overseas export information in network searches; these belong to completely different corporate entities from the RANZ automobile brand under FAW Toyota and should not be confused.

Future Outlook

As of 2026, the RANZ brand is in a de facto “dormant” state.

The brand has not released new cars or updated mass production plans for many years. Its last concept car, the RF-EA2, was released in 2017, marking a nine-year period without any new model launches. Platforms such as Pacific Auto have labeled the RANZ brand as “Not mass-produced for sale,” and no official announcement has been made regarding any restart or mass production plans.

From an organizational perspective, the business architecture of the FAW Toyota Sales Headquarters still includes the sales and after-sales service of RANZ vehicles, indicating that the brand has not been officially revoked at the legal or organizational levels. However, against the macro backdrop of the overall decline of joint venture independent brands, and with FAW Toyota focusing more resources on Toyota brand new energy models (such as the bZ Electric Series), the possibility of the RANZ brand being revived and put into production is extremely low. The vision described by officials in 2013—that “with the enrichment of the product lineup, different colors of the N-shaped hollowed part of the trademark would be used to represent different model attributes”—is now very difficult to realize.

In comprehensive judgment, the RANZ brand remains in a “brand but no product” stagnation state between 2025 and 2026, becoming a historical symbol and industry footnote in the wave of joint venture independent brands.
