An automotive positioning system is an indispensable core hardware component for navigation and location-based services in modern intelligent connected vehicles. It primarily comprises Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS, such as GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, etc.), Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), high-definition (HD) maps, and in-vehicle telematics modules, engineered to deliver continuous, real-time, and high-precision 3D spatial coordinates and dynamic vehicle status data.
The core mechanism of the positioning system centres on multi-source data fusion, satellite timing trilateration, and inertial dead reckoning:
Multi-constellation satellite signal reception and RTK differential positioning: The receiver determines the vehicle's latitude and longitude based on trilateration principles by simultaneously acquiring radio signals from multiple navigation satellites. Coupled with ground-based Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) differential technology, positioning accuracy can be dramatically enhanced from metre-level down to sub-metre or even centimetre-level.
Inertial navigation integration and continuous dead reckoning: When driving into blind spots where satellite signals are obstructed—such as under flyovers, inside tunnels, or within basement car parks—the system seamlessly switches over to the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Utilizing gyroscopes and accelerometers for dead reckoning, it ensures uninterrupted positioning and navigation services.
Positioning systems are extensively utilised in everyday route navigation, connected-car live traffic updates, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and autonomous driving features (such as HD map-assisted navigation driving).
High-precision positioning not only significantly enhances route planning efficiency and prevents drivers from getting lost or taking unnecessary detours, but also serves as the foundational infrastructure for high-level autonomous driving, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, and vehicle anti-theft tracking. It endows modern vehicles with crucial spatial awareness and smart mobility capabilities.
The illegal use of unauthorized high-power GPS jammers or signal blockers inside the vehicle is strictly prohibited. Doing so will not only disrupt surrounding public radio communications, but also cause a complete failure of the vehicle's onboard navigation systems, potentially compromising emergency rescue location tracking.
Drivers must never blindly rely on the absolute accuracy of standard civilian positioning systems to execute autonomous driving operations in extreme conditions. When encountering severe weather, strong electromagnetic interference, or areas prone to severe satellite signal multipath reflections, drivers must remain prepared to take manual control of the vehicle at all times.
