Porsche Macan

2026-10-08 06:50:00

The Porsche Macan is a mid-size luxury SUV from the German marque, taking its name from the Indonesian word for "tiger". Porsche commenced production of the Macan at its Leipzig facility in Germany in late 2013. Sharing its platform with the Audi Q5, the Macan challenged the notion that "a Porsche must be prohibitively expensive", enjoying sustained popularity since its debut to remain one of Porsche's top-selling models. Now in its second generation, the Macan line-up is offered in both petrol (ICE) and all-electric (EV) forms.

Model Overview

Positioned as a mid-size SUV, the Macan currently sees its 2026 petrol and all-electric versions sold concurrently. The petrol range comprises five variants with indicative pricing from RM578,000 to RM858,000, whilst the all-electric range is available in three variants priced between RM598,000 and RM968,000. Due to its ageing platform, the petrol Macan has entered the final phase of its production lifecycle—Porsche's CFO officially confirmed the full discontinuation of the ICE Macan during a Q1 earnings call. Sales were phased out in Europe back in 2024, whilst remaining inventory in China will be sold through 2027. Key rivals include similar mid-size luxury performance SUVs such as the Maserati Grecale.

Design Language

The petrol Macan retains Porsche's signature SUV silhouette. The front end is dominated by a large air intake grille, with dimensions measuring 4,726 mm in length, 1,922/1,927 mm in width, 1,621 mm in height, and a 2,807 mm wheelbase. The 2026 model drops special exterior paint options like Racing Yellow, Miami Blue, Papaya Metallic, and Midnight Blue, leaving 11 colours on offer.

Built on the dedicated PPE electric platform, the all-electric Macan adopts a split headlamp setup with distinctive, raised daytime running lights (DRLs) that echo Porsche's classic design DNA. It measures 4,784 mm long, 1,938 mm wide, and 1,622 mm tall, with a 2,893 mm wheelbase. Cargo capacity stands at 84 litres for the front boot (frunk) and 540 litres for the rear boot, expandable up to 1,348 litres. The rear features the brand's signature full-width LED light bar, with aerodynamics optimised to an impressive 0.25 Cd. For 2026, the EV version omits Papaya Metallic while adding Driver Drowsiness Detection as standard.

Powertrain & Performance

The petrol Macan is offered with a choice of two powertrains: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four or a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. The 2.0T mill produces 195 kW (265 PS) and 400 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.4 seconds onto a top speed of 232 km/h. The Macan S gets the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 with 280 kW, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The flagship Macan GTS ups output to 324 kW (441 PS), cutting the century sprint to 4.3 seconds. All petrol variants are paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch (PDK) transmission.

The all-electric Macan is built on an 800V high-voltage architecture and comes standard with a 100 kWh gross capacity lithium-ion battery pack across the range. The Long Range variant develops 265 kW and 563 Nm, delivering a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds and a CLTC range of 676 km. The dual-motor AWD Macan 4 delivers 300 kW and 650 Nm, dispatching 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds with 683 km of range. The range-topping Macan Turbo delivers an immense 470 kW and 1,130 Nm, hitting 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds with up to 702 km of range. DC fast charging can juice the battery from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Chassis & Handling

All petrol Macan variants come standard with an active all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Under the skin, the V6-powered Macan S and GTS feature adaptive air suspension as standard, which is also available as an option on the base 2.0T. Variable ratio steering and adaptive damping with ride height adjustment are standard across the board.

The all-electric Macan features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with dual-valve dampers across all variants, with rear-axle steering available on higher-spec trims. Thanks to the low-mounted battery pack, the EV Macan achieves an optimal, rear-biased 48:52 weight distribution.

Cabin & Equipment

Inside, the Macan retains Porsche's driver-centric cockpit layout. Standard equipment across all variants includes a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, powered tailgate, and heated front seats. For 2026, the 360-degree surround-view camera has been removed from the petrol model's options list. The electric Macan features a contemporary T-layout dashboard with a triple-screen setup, head-up display (HUD), and an infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and remote app connectivity. Boot space on the petrol model stands at 488 litres, expanding to 1,503 litres with the rear seats folded.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The petrol Macan comes standard with Lane Departure Warning, whilst Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and active safety features are optional. It offers Level 2 driver assistance capabilities, including standard Cruise Control, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Stop & Go full-speed ACC. Passive safety covers driver and front passenger airbags, front and rear side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags as standard. The 2026 electric Macan gains Driver Drowsiness Detection.

Market Performance & Outlook

Since its launch in 2013, the Macan took just 12 years to hit the one-million sales milestone—a feat that took the iconic Porsche 911 54 years. This makes the Macan the fastest model to reach one million deliveries in Porsche's history. In 2025, global deliveries reached 84,328 units (up 2% year-on-year), representing 30% of Porsche's total volume; this comprised 45,367 electric Macans and 38,961 petrol units. Even accounting for petrol models alone, Macan sales still outstripped both the Panamera and 718 line-ups, underscoring its role as the brand's primary volume driver.

Nevertheless, after more than a decade on sale, certain vehicle systems on the petrol Macan have aged, leading component suppliers to gradually cease production; moreover, the legacy platform cannot meet the EU's latest cybersecurity and ADAS compliance mandates. Porsche has confirmed that the petrol Macan will be completely phased out. At this crucial juncture of electrification, the Macan nameplate is leading Porsche's major shift from ICE to pure electric power. As one of the most commercially successful models in Porsche's history, the Macan has not only reshaped the luxury compact-to-midsize SUV segment, but also serves as a pivotal bridge guiding the marque into the zero-emissions era.
