2026-10-12 08:40:00

Model Overview

The Polestar 5 is the flagship fully electric four-door GT grand tourer from the Polestar brand, marking the production culmination of five years of development following the debut of the Precept concept car in 2020. The vehicle officially made its world premiere at the Munich Motor Show in September 2025. Built on the brand's first dedicated in-house platform—the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) —the Polestar 5 features a bespoke bonded all-aluminium body structure. In terms of dimensions, it measures around 5 metres long, 2,063 mm wide, and 1,419 mm tall. The lineup is offered in two variants: the Dual-motor variant and the Performance variant. For the European market, prices start from 119,900 euros (approx. RM920,000) for the standard version and 142,900 euros (approx. RM1,100,000) for the Performance version; down under in Australia, the Dual-motor is priced from AUD 171,100, with the Performance going for AUD 193,100. The model goes head-to-head with high-performance luxury electric rivals such as the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the Polestar 5 stays remarkably faithful to the design of the Precept concept. Up front, it sports signature Dual-blade LED headlights incorporating Pixel LED technology. The profile is clean and sleek, complemented by flush pop-out door handles and frameless doors. Around the back, it adopts an aerodynamic Kamm-tail design that deletes the conventional rear windscreen, seamlessly integrating with the expansive full glass roof. The sleek shape delivers a low drag coefficient of just Cd 0.24. Wheel sizes range from 20 inches to 22 inches. Inside, the cabin embraces clean Scandinavian minimalism, boasting a 9-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen, and a 9.5-inch head-up display (HUD). The infotainment runs on a dedicated, Polestar-tailored Android Automotive OS with built-in Google services. Sustainable materials feature heavily throughout the interior, including woven flax composite panels, recycled PET upholstery, and Econyl regenerated nylon floor carpets.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the skin, the entire Polestar 5 range packs a 112 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion battery pack (106 kWh usable capacity) built on an 800V electrical architecture. It supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging, completing a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in just 22 minutes. The Dual-motor variant develops a combined system output of 550 kW (748 hp) and 812 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.8 to 3.9 seconds, with a claimed WLTP range of 670 km. Stepping up to the flagship Performance variant bumps outputs to 650 kW (884 hp) and a massive 1,015 Nm, dispatching the 0-100 km/h benchmark in a blistering 3.1 to 3.2 seconds, offering a WLTP range of 565 km. Top speed for both models is electronically capped at 250 km/h. Independent real-world tests have seen the Performance trim clock a sub-3-second 0-100 km/h run in just 2.8 seconds. On the AC charging front, it supports inputs of up to 19 kW. A charging status indicator is integrated into the C-pillar.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

Thanks to the bespoke PPA bonded all-aluminium architecture, the Polestar 5 achieves torsional rigidity superior to that of many purpose-built supercars. The suspension setup utilises a front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension configuration. The Dual-motor version is fitted with a BWI passive damper setup featuring hydraulic rebound stops; the Performance version upgrades to the BWI MagneRide® semi-active magnetorheological damping suspension, which reads road surface inputs up to 1,000 times per second and adjusts damping forces within 3 milliseconds. Stopping power comes courtesy of standard Brembo four-piston brake callipers clamping onto lightweight dual-cast discs. The steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle line, delivering enhanced on-centre stability and tactile road feel. Handling is razor-sharp with predictable, natural body roll during aggressive cornering and superb feedback. Kerb weight comes in at approximately 2,500 kg, with a maximum braked towing capacity rated at 1,800 kg.

Cabin and Practicality

The interior adopts a 4+1 seating layout (a dedicated four-seater configuration with a fold-down rear centre armrest serving as an occasional fifth seat). The front sports seats were jointly developed by Polestar and Recaro, providing a low-slung, engaging driving position with excellent lateral bolster support. Rear seat passengers are treated to seat heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Clever "foot garage" recesses carved into the floor-mounted battery pack free up generous rear footwell room. An entry 10-speaker audio system comes as standard, while an audiophile-grade 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system is available as an option. Overhead, a massive panoramic fixed glass roof stretches 1.83 metres long. Cargo capacity is rated at 365 litres in the rear boot, accompanied by a 62-litre front boot (frunk). Cabin comforts include four-zone automatic climate control and a 15W Qi wireless smartphone charger.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

On the safety front, the Polestar 5 comes standard with 8 airbags. Its comprehensive sensor suite comprises 11 external cameras, 12 ultrasonic parking sensors, a mid-range radar, and an interior driver monitoring camera. Additionally, an in-cabin radar system tracks occupant count, seating positions, and passenger classifications to optimise airbag and restraint deployment during an impact. Driving assistance comes via the Pilot Assist suite, capable of maintaining lane-centring assist at motorway speeds of up to 150 km/h. The package includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to maintain safe following distances, along with Lane Change Assist, which autonomously executes smooth lane changes once the driver indicates and the path is clear.

Market Reception and Outlook

Since its September 2025 debut, the Polestar 5 has earned glowing reviews from international motoring press. CAR Magazine hailed it as "one of the most balanced and composed cars on the market", while Evo called it "cheaper, faster, and better looking than a Porsche Taycan". Top Gear's real-world trials revealed that the Dual-motor model returned an impressive energy efficiency of 3.9 mi/kWh even in blistering 40°C weather. In Q1 2026, Polestar's new vehicle registrations in Germany reached 1,284 units—a 50.2% surge year-on-year. The brand views 2026 as a crucial turning point in its journey "from premium to luxury", with the Polestar 5 spearheading this shift as its definitive halo model. However, as the Polestar 5 is assembled at the brand's plant in Chongqing, China, its rollout in North America faces headwinds due to the US 100% tariff on Chinese-built EVs. For mainland China, official pricing and retail delivery schedules have yet to be announced. Serving as Polestar's technological tour de force and design showcase, the Polestar 5 firmly sets a new benchmark in the high-end electric GT category with its bonded aluminium architecture, 884 hp performance, 800V ultra-fast charging capability, and progressive Scandinavian luxury ethos.
