Pick-up (English: Pickup) is a phonetic transliteration of "Pickup Truck", referring to a light commercial vehicle engineered with an enclosed cabin and an open rear cargo bed. Combining the ride comfort of a passenger car with the haulage capability of a truck, it serves as a quintessential dual-purpose vehicle for both passengers and cargo. This unique "part passenger car, part truck" versatility allows it to be widely utilised across various sectors, from commercial fleet and utility duties to daily family transport and customised off-road builds.

The defining structural feature of a pick-up truck is its "passenger car up front, cargo bed at the back" configuration. The front section and passenger cabin are seamlessly integrated, typically adopting passenger-car-inspired interior ergonomics and chassis tuning to deliver essential ride comfort, while the open rear bed handles cargo-hauling duties.
From a regulatory perspective, under China's national standard (GB7258-2017), pick-up trucks are officially classified as "multi-purpose goods vehicles". In more detailed vehicle classifications, they fall under the broader category of commercial goods vehicles.
The primary appeal of a pick-up truck lies in its exceptional versatility. Compared to conventional light-duty commercial trucks and mini trucks, pick-up trucks offer superior safety, ride comfort, and handling dynamics. When compared with conventional sedans or SUVs, they deliver higher payload ratings, more versatile cargo volume, and superior all-terrain capability over rough roads. Furthermore, most models are available in 4x2 (2WD) or 4x4 (4WD) drivetrains, paired with petrol or diesel engine options to cater to diverse driving needs.
Pick-up trucks can be categorised in several ways. Based on brand heritage and engineering philosophy, they are broadly divided into Japanese-style pick-up trucks and American-style pick-up trucks. Japanese pick-ups are typically more compact, robust, and fuel-efficient, whereas American pick-ups are renowned for their muscular dimensions, imposing road presence, and high-output powertrains.
In terms of body configurations, mainstream market offerings include standard Double Cab pick-ups (seating 2 to 6 occupants), Space/Extra Cab models, Single Cab workhorses, and canopy-enclosed pick-up derivatives (multi-purpose off-road vehicles/SUVs), among others.
In 2024, total pick-up truck sales in China reached 516,000 units, reflecting an overall stable market performance. Currently, Chinese pick-up offerings are rapidly evolving towards greater passenger-car refinement, larger body dimensions, and advanced technology. Mainstream models now come equipped with passenger-car-grade appointments, including leather upholstery, electric sunroofs, and smart connected infotainment systems. Concurrently, as municipal authorities progressively ease urban access restrictions and an upscale lifestyle pick-up culture takes root, consumer demand in China is shifting away from purely utilitarian workhorses towards versatile lifestyle, off-road, and personalised leisure vehicles.
