Own Damage Insurance (Vehicle Damage Cover)

2026-10-22 09:00:00

Own Damage Insurance, formally designated as "Motor Vehicle Damage Insurance", is the cornerstone comprehensive policy within commercial motor vehicle insurance. It primarily covers physical loss or damage to the insured vehicle arising from natural disasters or unforeseen road accidents during lawful use. Following the comprehensive reform of commercial motor insurance, the modern Own Damage policy has integrated several high-frequency add-on covers that previously required separate endorsements, establishing an all-inclusive, one-stop vehicle asset protection scheme.

Scope of Coverage and Integrated Endorsements

The scope of Own Damage insurance covers various external risks encountered across driving, parking, and transit scenarios, specifically comprising:

Accidents and Collision Damage:

Compensation for direct physical loss or damage sustained by the insured vehicle's body, components, and standard accessories due to road accidents such as collisions, overturns, and plunges.

Natural Disaster Perils (Special Perils):

Compensation for flood damage, crushing, or destruction caused to the vehicle by common natural calamities such as lightning strikes, windstorms, heavy downpours, floods, typhoons, landslides, and subsidence (excluding earthquakes and other extreme exempted perils).

Comprehensive Consolidation of Standalone Add-ons:

The current Own Damage policy has unified previously separate endorsements—such as vehicle theft, windscreen cover, spontaneous combustion, engine water damage (special perils for hydro-locking), waiver of excess, and hit-and-run third-party damage clauses—into the principal policy coverage. This implies that vehicle theft, localised windscreen breakage, engine damage from restarting after stalling in waterlogged areas, and untraceable third-party hit-and-run damages are fully claimable within the policy's limit of liability.

Exclusions and Underwriting Compliance Requirements

Whilst offering extensive protection, Own Damage insurance strictly outlines statutory and contractual exclusions where claims will not be honoured:

Core Policy Exclusions:

Illegal Driving and Non-Compliant Operation: Vehicle damage sustained whilst the driver holds no valid driving licence, operates a class of vehicle not covered by their licence, or drives under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs, or controlled intoxicating substances.

Wilful Acts and Fraudulent Claims: Incidents where the policyholder or driver intentionally causes an accident, commits arson, or engages in fraudulent practices to obtain insurance payouts.

Specific Usage Exclusions: Incidents occurring during motor sports, racing, or pace-making tests, as well as vehicle damage arising from driving an unroadworthy vehicle that has failed or evaded mandatory periodic vehicle inspections (Puspakom equivalent).

Sum Insured and Depreciation Calculation:

The sum insured for Own Damage cover is generally determined based on either the Agreed Value or Market Value (retail price less depreciation) of the vehicle at the point of policy inception. In the event of a claim, the sum insured serves as the maximum payout limit for total loss (constructive total loss) or repairable partial loss claims.

Claims Workflow and Loss Adjusting Standards

Accident Reporting and Site Preservation:

Upon the occurrence of an incident covered under the policy, the vehicle owner must lodge a police report (where required) and notify the respective insurance company within the stipulated time frame, whilst taking necessary measures to secure the accident scene and mitigate further loss.

Damage Assessment and Repair Estimation:

The insurance company will assign an adjuster to inspect the vehicle or facilitate digital claims assessment to verify the cause of the accident and assess the damaged components. Once the repair methodology, authorised labour hours, and spare parts replacement costs are mutually agreed upon, the owner may send the vehicle to an authorised panel workshop for repairs.

Claims Disbursement and Settlement:

Upon completion of repair works and submission of official documentation, the insurer will disburse the claim amount—subject to any applicable excess (deductible) and policy betterment rates—directly to the policyholder or the authorised panel workshop, concluding the claims process.
