Natural Gas Engine

2026-10-28 14:50:00

A Natural Gas Engine is an internal combustion powertrain system that runs primarily on natural gas (predominantly methane). Compared to conventional petrol or diesel powerplants, natural gas engines deliver significant advantages in terms of environmental performance and operational running costs. They are widely deployed in city transit buses, medium- to heavy-duty commercial vehicles, and specialised industrial transport fleets, serving as a vital technical pathway for conventional fossil-fuel commercial vehicles transitioning towards low-carbon operations.

Core Working Principle and Technical Characteristics

The core design of a natural gas engine centres on "high compression ratio, lean-burn combustion, and dedicated fuel management":

Fuel characteristics and combustion control: Natural gas features a high octane rating (typically exceeding 120 RON), allowing the engine to run a higher compression ratio to maximise thermal efficiency. An electronically controlled gas injection system delivers precise air-fuel metering within the intake manifold or directly in-cylinder, which is then ignited via spark plugs.

Low emissions and thermal efficiency optimisation: With fewer carbon atoms in natural gas molecules, tailpipe carbon dioxide and particulate matter (PM) emissions are substantially lower than those of conventional diesel engines. When paired with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a three-way catalytic converter, the system effectively meets stringent emission standards.

Application Scenarios and Market Value

This technology is widely utilised in urban distribution lorries, long-haul heavy-duty prime movers, and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) commercial buses and coaches.

In commercial fleet operations, fuel expenditure directly dictates overall profitability. Thanks to relatively stable gas prices and lower fuel running costs, natural gas engines dramatically cut daily overheads for high-mileage, heavy-duty haulage. Concurrently, their proven capability in curtailing greenhouse gases and particulate emissions makes them pivotal to green logistics and urban decarbonisation policies.

Safety Regulations and Physical Limitations

It is strictly prohibited to use naked flames for leak detection or conduct electrical repairs in enclosed spaces if gas odours are detected around high-pressure storage tanks, pipe fittings, or pressure regulator valves; any combustible gas-air mixture reaching its flammability limit can easily trigger a deflagration or flash fire upon ignition.

It is strictly forbidden to use vehicle-mounted high-pressure gas cylinders that are overdue for mandatory periodic inspections or hydrostatic testing, or those exhibiting severe surface corrosion, structural deformation, or impact dents, as fatigue failure in high-pressure vessels poses catastrophic safety hazards.
