NOS

2026-10-25 19:50:00

NOS (Nitrous Oxide System) is a mechanical/electronic forced induction modification system that delivers a massive, instantaneous boost in engine power output by injecting high-purity nitrous oxide directly into the combustion chambers. Originally developed from high-altitude boost technologies used in WWII military aircraft, it was later widely adopted in automotive performance tuning and drag racing. Unlike turbochargers or superchargers that continuously compress intake air, NOS provides a non-continuous, burst-style forced induction. By decomposing liquid nitrous oxide under high temperatures into dense oxygen and combining it with a supplementary shot of fuel, it achieves explosive combustion energy within milliseconds, unleashing ferocious vehicle acceleration.

Core Technical Architecture and Operating Principles

The technical architecture of a NOS setup primarily consists of a high-pressure nitrous oxide cylinder/bottle, main control solenoids, high-pressure delivery lines, nozzles (fogger or plate nozzles), and an engine fuel enrichment system:

High-Pressure Liquid Storage and Instantaneous Pressure Reduction/Vaporisation:

Nitrous oxide is stored in the cylinder under high pressure in liquid form. When the driver triggers NOS via a steering wheel or centre console switch, the main high-pressure solenoid opens instantaneously, allowing liquid nitrous oxide to surge through braided high-pressure lines to the intake manifold or combustion chamber runners. Upon encountering ambient engine bay temperatures, the liquid nitrous experiences rapid depressurisation and vaporises, expanding hundreds of times in volume in an instant.

Oxygen-Enriched Combustion and Synchronous Fuel Injection Compensation:

When nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) enters the combustion chamber and reaches temperatures of approximately 300°C, it undergoes thermal dissociation, breaking down into oxygen and nitrogen. The released oxygen is far denser than atmospheric air, dramatically enhancing combustion. Simultaneously, the system's electronic controller triggers supplementary fuel injection, allowing massive amounts of fuel to mix with high-concentration oxygen for an intense, explosive burn inside the cylinders, instantly ramping up engine output by 30% or several-fold.

Safety Guidelines and Physical Limitations

Strictly Prohibiting NOS Activation on Cold Engines, Unreinforced Motors, or Inadequate Cooling/Fuel Systems:

The explosive cylinder pressure and thermal stress generated by NOS place destructive loads on an engine's internal components. Blindly installing and spraying NOS on daily commuters or un-upgraded factory engines is strictly forbidden; the immense instantaneous pressure can instantly cause bent connecting rods, melted pistons, cracked engine blocks, or catastrophic engine blowouts.

Strictly Prohibiting Spraying NOS on Public Roads, Congested Traffic, Highways, or Non-Closed Tracks:

Activating NOS unleashes violent acceleration that can easily overwhelm a driver's sensory limits and reflexes under extreme G-forces. Spraying nitrous oxide on public roads is strictly prohibited; not only does it severely violate traffic regulations, but it also creates an extreme danger of vehicle control loss and fatal collisions with other road users.
