NASCAR Xfinity Series

Definition and Heritage
The NASCAR Xfinity Series serves as NASCAR’s second-tier national championship, functioning primarily as the key feeder pathway to the premier Cup Series. Tracing its origins back to 1982 as the Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series, the championship underwent several title sponsorship rebrandings—including the Busch Grand National Series and Nationwide Series—before taking on the Xfinity Series moniker in 2015. From the 2026 season onward, the championship officially becomes the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, though it remains widely known within the industry as the Xfinity Series.

Series Role and Objective
The core role of the Xfinity Series is to allow up-and-coming drivers to gain crucial track experience required to step up to the Cup Series. Races are typically staged at the same circuits as the Cup Series over shorter distances, providing drivers with vital "seat time" on familiar layouts. Cup Series regulars also frequently drop in on their off days to stay sharp—a trend historically dubbed "Buschwhacking", referring to top-tier drivers stepping down to compete against development field rivals.

2026 Season Format and Regulations
For the 2026 season, NASCAR has standardised "The Chase" format across all three national series, replacing the previous knockout-style playoffs. Following the conclusion of the Xfinity Series regular season, the top 16 drivers in the standings qualify for The Chase. Unlike the former format, round-by-round eliminations have been scrapped; all qualifiers contest every race throughout The Chase, with the driver accumulating the highest total points crowned overall champion. The scoring structure has been revised in tandem, with race winners now awarded 55 points.

2026 Season Championship Standings
Following the Pocono round, Justin Allgaier heads the drivers' championship with 1,048 points after securing his third win of the season and hauling 72 points from the event, underlining JR Motorsports' strong form. Carson Kvapil sits second on 810 points, trailed by Sheldon Creed in third with 782 points. Jesse Love and Cole Day occupy fourth and fifth spots respectively. On the manufacturer front, Chevrolet maintains a dominant edge in terms of both grid numbers and overall race results.

Key Drivers and Teams
JR Motorsports stands as one of the benchmark teams in the Xfinity Series, with drivers such as Allgaier, Kvapil, and Zilisch all clinching race wins in the 2026 season. Joe Gibbs Racing spearheads the Toyota stable, with Brandon Jones and Taylor Gray securing prominent positions near the top of the standings. Richard Childress Racing’s Jesse Love, alongside Haas Factory Team’s Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed, likewise remain formidable title contenders.
