Motor Insurance Companies

2026-10-21 21:00:03

Motor insurance companies refer to general insurance firms approved and established by the National Financial Regulatory Administration that specialise in or primarily underwrite motor vehicle insurance policies. Motor insurance stands as the single largest segment in the general insurance market, consistently accounting for over 60% of total gross premium income. In 2025, direct premium income in China's motor insurance market crossed 1.2 trillion yuan, charting a 4.2% year-on-year growth. As new energy vehicle (NEV) adoption breaches a critical tipping point and commercial motor insurance reforms deepen, the industry is pivoting from crude price wars towards multidimensional, high-value competition driven by technology, customer service, and ecosystem integration.

Market Landscape: High Concentration Dominated by the "Big Three"

China's motor insurance market remains highly concentrated. As of end-2025, Ping An Auto Insurance, PICC Motor Insurance, and CPIC Motor Insurance firmly anchored the top three spots, with their combined premium volume capturing more than 65% of the total industry. Industry frontrunners continue to cement their market dominance via substantial capital strength, extensive service networks, heavy tech investments, and ecosystem synergies, whilst small and mid-sized insurers seek differentiated breakthroughs in niche segments and regional markets.

Ping An Auto Insurance leads the industry in both premium volume and market share. Powered by the Ping An Group's "Finance + Technology" blueprint, it has established an end-to-end digital service ecosystem covering underwriting, claims processing, daily vehicle usage, and aftersales maintenance. Its "Hao Che Zhu" (Good Car Owner) app integrates 82 motoring-related services, including refuelling, EV charging, car washes, and routine servicing, while its AI-driven loss assessment model delivers a 98.7% recognition accuracy rate.

PICC Motor Insurance, backed by state-owned enterprise credentials and an expansive nationwide on-ground service network, commands inherent advantages in government partnerships, large commercial fleets, operating vehicles, and lower-tier district markets. District-level markets account for approximately 38% of its premiums, with physical branches blanketing administrative regions nationwide. Nevertheless, a discernible gap remains compared to top-tier digital leaders in terms of digital transformation speed and online customer experience.

CPIC Motor Insurance maintains a prudent operating strategy, posting insurance service revenue of 197.191 billion yuan and a net profit of 9.864 billion yuan in 2025. The insurer continues to make headway in AI damage assessments and NEV insurance innovations (such as battery-as-a-service / vehicle-battery separated coverage schemes), with digital claims handling accounting for 78% of total cases.

Beyond the "Big Three", China United Property Insurance ranked fifth overall with a premium volume of 70.63 billion yuan, maintaining a nationwide lead in agricultural insurance. Meanwhile, AXA Tianping (formerly Tianping Auto Insurance), China's pioneer specialised motor insurer, has been a wholly owned subsidiary of France's AXA Group since 2019, focusing on a balanced portfolio across motor and health insurance.

Automakers Enter the Fray: NEV Insurance Becomes the Main Battlefield

In recent years, nearly 20 mainstream car-makers have secured insurance credentials through organic setups or corporate takeovers to cross over into the motor insurance domain. The primary catalyst is building a complete "car + insurance" closed-loop service lifecycle, leveraging real-time telematics and vehicle data to refine risk-pricing algorithms, and unlocking fresh aftersales revenue streams.

Notable developments include: BYD fully acquiring Yi'an P&C Insurance in 2023 and rebranding it as BYD Property & Casualty Insurance; NIO and Li Auto securing insurance intermediary licences via brokerage acquisitions; BNP Paribas Astar Property & Casualty Insurance receiving regulatory green light to commence operations in October 2025—backed by BNP Paribas Cardif, Xiaomi Group (33% stake), and Volkswagen Financial Services (18% stake)—with a core mandate to roll out bespoke insurance products tailored to the NEV ecosystem; and Toyota establishing its dedicated Toyota Insurance Brokerage in Beijing in 2025.

Urtrust Insurance represents China's first specialised motor insurance company initiated by an automotive manufacturer (GAC Group). Established in 2011, it is deeply embedded within the automotive supply chain, having underwritten a cumulative total of approximately 11 trillion yuan in risk protection for the industry. The firm has also ventured into pioneering dedicated insurance packages for low-speed autonomous vehicles and smart connected mobility equipment.

Industry Challenges: The "Three Highs" Dilemma of NEV Insurance

Currently, NEV insurance is caught in a double bind where "car owners lament hefty premiums, while insurers bleed from underwriting losses". Industry statistics reveal that in 2024, China's NEV insurance underwriting registered a combined loss of 5.7 billion yuan across 2,795 insured model lines, with 137 model lines suffering loss ratios exceeding 100%. On average, NEV insurance premiums run roughly 21% higher than internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, with pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) commanding an additional 1,687 yuan in annual premiums.

This elevated loss ratio is driven by unique EV driving dynamics, higher annual mileage induced by low running costs, a substantial proportion of commercial e-hailing usage, and still-maturing component repair technologies. Armed with connected-car telematics and repair data, automakers are expected to enhance risk assessment and tiered pricing precision across electric mobility scenarios, fostering a fairer alignment between actual risk profiles and premium rates.
