Model Overview

The Mitsubishi Triton is a mid-size pick-up truck by Mitsubishi Motors, also marketed globally under the "L200" nameplate in several markets. The model made its global debut in its sixth-generation guise in Thailand on 26 July 2023, marking a major milestone as the Triton returned to the Japanese domestic market after a 12-year absence. Developed around the product concept of "Power for Adventure", it is positioned as an all-round pick-up truck engineered to blend rugged off-road capability with daily driving comfort. The sixth-generation Triton is available in Single Cab and Double Cab body styles, offered across various trim levels tailored for different markets. In terms of pricing, the Double Cab variant in Thailand is tagged between approximately RM171,300 and RM214,600; the Japanese market starts from 4,980,800 yen; while in Malaysia, prices start from RM 101,980. The corresponding version in the domestic Chinese market is known as the Mitsubishi L200.
Design Language
The sixth-generation Triton incorporates Mitsubishi's latest "Dynamic Shield" front fascia design. Up front, it features a bold trapezoidal front grille with prominent "MITSUBISHI" lettering across the centre, flanked by split-type LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and headlamp clusters. The front end has been elevated for a more commanding road presence, with the front grille and LED lighting assemblies forming a cohesive X-shaped motif. Along the sides, muscular character lines define the silhouette, leading to vertically stacked rear combination lamps featuring signature L-shaped light guides for enhanced visibility and recognisability. In terms of dimensions, the pick-up measures 5,320 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,795 mm in height, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. The cargo bed floor height has been lowered by 45 mm compared to its predecessor to 820 mm, significantly improving loading ease. Additionally, the new truck comes equipped with larger door handles and broader side steps.
Inside, the sixth-generation Triton moves away from a purely utilitarian workhorse layout in favour of a more refined, SUV-inspired cabin design. The dashboard houses a 7-inch digital instrument cluster alongside an 8-inch or 10-inch central touchscreen infotainment display. The centre console is fitted with piano-style toggle switches and dual-zone automatic climate control. Drive mode selection retains an intuitive rotary dial for switching between 4WD modes. The 2026 JDM version further gains a sleek "Dark Titanium" dark grey interior theme, elevating the overall cabin ambience and premium feel.
Powertrain and Performance
Powering the sixth-generation Triton is a newly developed 2.4-litre inline-four turbo-diesel engine, codenamed 4N16. It is offered in three different states of tune depending on the variant:
Low-output version: 110 kW (approx. 150 PS) / 330 Nm
Standard version: 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) / 430 Nm
High-output version (Bi-Turbo) : 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) / 470 Nm
Transmission choices include a 6-speed automatic transmission (6AT) or a 6-speed manual gearbox (6MT). The flagship bi-turbo variant employs a two-stage turbocharging system, delivering robust low-end torque for effortless drivability.
Chassis and Handling
The sixth-generation Triton is built upon a newly developed ladder-frame chassis. Featuring extensive use of high-tensile steel, the new chassis boasts a 65% larger cross-sectional area over the previous generation, yielding a 40% increase in bending rigidity and a 60% jump in torsional rigidity, whilst raising overall structural rigidity by 60%. Suspension duties are handled by a front double-wishbone independent setup and rear leaf springs. The 2026 JDM specification goes a step further with high-performance dampers co-developed with Yamaha, effectively dampening chassis and diesel engine vibrations to improve high-speed cruising stability and ride quality.
For the four-wheel-drive system, range-topping variants are equipped with Mitsubishi's advanced Super Select 4WD-II system, offering four selectable modes: 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time 4WD), 4HLc (4WD High with locked centre differential), and 4LLc (4WD Low with locked centre differential). The system is paired with Active Yaw Control (AYC), which lightly brakes the inside front wheel to sharpen turn-in and optimise cornering stability. Drivers can toggle across 7 drive modes: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. Base variants come equipped with the Easy Select 4WD system featuring 2H, 4H, and 4L modes. In addition, Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA) are fitted as standard across the range.
Cabin and Equipment
Cabin-wise, all sixth-generation Triton models come equipped as standard with a central touchscreen infotainment unit supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Higher-grade variants add a Qi wireless smartphone charging pad. Comfort conveniences include dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2026 JDM variant also adds Panasonic's nanoe X air purification technology to maintain clean cabin air quality. On the connectivity front, the pick-up features telematics services, enabling owners to monitor vehicle status remotely via the Mitsubishi Connect mobile app, whilst automatically transmitting an emergency SOS signal upon airbag deployment. Out back, the rear cargo bed loading height has been reduced to 820 mm for effortless cargo loading and unloading. The 2026 JDM version also introduces an electric power tailgate assist system.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the sixth-generation Triton scored a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australia (tested in 2024). Passive safety equipment includes standard front airbags, side thorax airbags, curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a front-centre airbag across all variants.
For active safety and advanced driver assistance systems, higher variants are fitted with the Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing (MMSS) suite, comprising:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with vehicle-to-vehicle, vulnerable road user, and junction turn assist
Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK)
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Lane Change Assist (LCA)
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
Reverse Autonomous Emergency Braking (Rear AEB), standard on Utility variants
Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) comes standard across the entire model line-up.
Market Performance and Reception
Following its global premiere in Thailand in July 2023, the sixth-generation Triton was rolled out across key markets including ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The Triton remains Mitsubishi Motors' best-selling model worldwide, posting global sales of 131,000 units in FY2025. In Southeast Asia, the Triton continues to be a formidable contender: maintaining a solid top-three pick-up sales position in Thailand in 2024, while in Vietnam, sales reached 467 units in March 2026, marking an impressive 641.3% month-on-month surge. The model is produced at Mitsubishi's production hub in Thailand and exported to over 150 countries and regions worldwide.
Motoring media and industry analysts note that the sixth-generation Triton takes on established mid-size pick-up benchmarks such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Mitsubishi has also confirmed the all-new Triton's entry into the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR), conquering gruelling terrains across mountains, jungles, mud tracks, and rivers to showcase its real-world off-road prowess and bulletproof durability. All in all, with its re-engineered ladder-frame chassis, potent 2.4T diesel engine, Super Select 4WD-II system, and comprehensive ADAS suite, the sixth-generation Mitsubishi Triton presents a compelling, highly competitive package in the fiercely contested one-tonne pick-up segment.
