Mid-size Cars

2026-10-21 07:20:00

Mid-size cars, also known as B-segment cars, refer to passenger vehicles positioned between compact and executive cars. Offering generous cabin space, well-balanced performance, and a comprehensive kit list, they remain a mainstream choice that caters to both executive and family needs.

Definition and Dimension Standards

The classification of mid-size cars hinges primarily on two core parameters: wheelbase and overall length. While segment boundaries may vary slightly across different standards, it is widely accepted that mid-size cars (B-segment) feature a wheelbase between 2.7 metres and 2.9 metres, and an overall length between 4.5 metres and 5.0 metres. Engine displacement typically ranges from 1.5L to 2.5L. The wheelbase is the key indicator of cabin space and serves as the primary benchmark for segment categorisation.

Market Standing and Segment Dynamics

The mid-size car market has long been defined by the industry adage "win the mid-size segment, win the market", making it a fiercely contested battleground for major automakers. Currently, this segment is witnessing an intense showdown between internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and new energy vehicles.

  • Solid Dominance of ICE Vehicles: In the first half of 2026, ICE models took eight of the top ten spots in mid-size sedan sales, with the podium swept by the Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, and Volkswagen Magotan. This resilience is underpinned by their long-established track record and strong brand equity among buyers.

  • New Energy Vehicles Disrupting the Status Quo: While still trailing in overall volume, the electrification push has begun to shake traditional market strongholds. The Tesla Model 3 has firmly established its position among the top contenders. Meanwhile, an intensifying price war has widened showroom discounts on models such as the Honda Accord, pushing entry-level prices of mid-size ICE sedans down to RM150,000 or even lower.
