Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV

2026-10-03 17:50:00

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) is the electrified derivative of the marque's flagship luxury limousine, built on the seventh-generation S-Class (W223) architecture. Serving as Mercedes-Benz’s technological vanguard in the ultra-luxury segment’s electrification push, the S-Class PHEV combines a 3.0T inline-six engine with an efficient electric motor to strike an immaculate balance between top-tier opulence and electrified mobility. The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV was officially launched on 28 October 2025. Sold domestically as a fully-imported (CBU) model, it is offered exclusively in the S 450 e L trim with an official recommended retail price of RM1,308,300, matching the 2025 model year. Its principal rivals include the BMW 7 Series PHEV and Audi A8L PHEV.

Design Language

Aesthetically, the 2026 S 450 e L is virtually identical to its pure petrol-powered sibling. Up front, it wears the iconic large chrome grille with horizontal multi-slats, crowned by the classic three-pointed star bonnet mascot standing proudly at the leading edge for commanding road presence. Illumination is courtesy of DIGITAL LIGHT LED headlamps featuring signature 'eagle-hook' daytime running lights, capable of ultra-precise adaptive beam masking. Along the flanks, its sleek and elegant silhouette is complemented by flush pop-out door handles that minimise aerodynamic drag while adding a sophisticated technological flourish. Round the back, triangular smoked LED tail lights are connected by an elegant horizontal chrome strip. The only exterior cue hinting at its electrified underpinnings is the discreet 'S 450 e L' boot badge. In terms of exterior dimensions, the limousine measures 5,290 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, and 1,503 mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 3,216 mm. Inside, the S 450 e L exemplifies the gold standard of Mercedes-Benz flagships, sporting a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch OLED central infotainment display. The dashboard and seats are lavishly upholstered in Nappa leather. Active ambient lighting sweeps continuously across the dashboard and door panels, offering customisable multi-colour palettes and dynamic lighting effects.

Powertrain & Performance

Propelling the S 450 e L is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine with a rear-mounted single electric motor. The combustion engine dishes out 270 kW (367 PS), while the permanent magnet synchronous motor provides 110 kW (150 PS) and 440 Nm of torque. Combined, the system produces a muscular 300 kW (408 PS) and 650 Nm of system torque. Power is channelled through a 9-speed automatic transmission (9G-TRONIC). The official 0-100 km/h century sprint is completed in a brisk 6.4 seconds. Energy is supplied by a 28.71 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, yielding a WLTC-rated pure electric range of 108 km. Under the WLTC test cycle, combined fuel consumption drops to just 1.44 L/100 km, while top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h. Furthermore, the powertrain is equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid setup (integrated starter-generator / ISG motor) to facilitate seamless engine stop-start, supplementary torque assistance, and energy recuperation while coasting. Charging-wise, DC fast charging takes roughly 0.33 hours (approx. 20 minutes), while standard AC charging takes about 3.25 hours.

Chassis & Handling

The S 450 e L utilises a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The suspension setup comprises a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension. Active air suspension (Airmatic) comes standard across the board, providing continuous adaptive damping and ride-height adjustment. Steering is managed by an electric power steering system. Braking is handled by ventilated discs front and rear, matched with an electronic parking brake (EPB). It rides on 255/45 R19 tyres. Drivers can tailor the driving experience via several drive modes, including Standard/Comfort, Eco, Sport, Pure Electric, Hybrid, and Individual.

Cabin & Equipment

Inside, the S 450 e L comes standard with a 12.3-inch full digital instrument display and a 12.8-inch OLED central touchscreen. The cockpit runs on the MBUX intelligent multimedia system featuring multi-zone voice recognition with the 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant, allowing the system to accurately pick up and execute commands issued even from the rear quarters. The infotainment suite supports Apple CarPlay, CarLife smartphone integration, and 5G connectivity. Acoustic performance is delivered by a premium Burmester® 3D surround sound system. The seats are wrapped in sumptuous premium leather, with both front and rear seats offering full electric adjustment alongside ventilation and heating functions. Luxury appointments include four-zone automatic climate control, wireless smartphone charging, soft-close doors, a hands-free powered boot lid, and electric rear-door window sunshades. A built-in dashcam module also comes factory-fitted.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

The S 450 e L leaves no stone unturned in terms of active and passive safety kit. On the passive safety front, it packs driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). For active safety, the limousine is equipped with a comprehensive Level 2+ advanced driver assistance suite, encompassing all-speed adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree surround-view camera, active lane change assist, and highway navigation on autopilot (Highway NOA). Sensor hardware includes 10 external cameras, 5 radar units, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Furthermore, the 4th-generation MBUX system integrates advanced AI capabilities, supporting remote parking assist and natural voice interactions. MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are fitted as standard.

Market Performance & Review

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV holds a distinctive niche in the high-end luxury plug-in hybrid segment. The S 450 e L commands a premium of over RM400,000 compared to the petrol-only S 450 L. Industry observers point out that Mercedes-Benz has intentionally positioned this plug-in hybrid as a compliance-friendly, prestige alternative tailored for buyers requiring green vehicle registration in quota-controlled cities, rather than pursuing aggressive pricing to drive outright volume. Notably, the Chinese market accounts for 45% of total global Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales. Throughout 2024, the S-Class comfortably defended its crown as the best-selling flagship luxury limousine in China, maintaining consistent monthly deliveries in the thousands. Nonetheless, amid the intensifying new energy transition, the S-Class PHEV faces increasing pressure from rival RM1,000,000-class offerings launched by emergent EV players. Even so, as the marque's technological showpiece, the S 450 e L—backed by its 3.0T six-cylinder plug-in hybrid mill, 108 km electric range, Level 2+ ADAS capability, and Burmester sound system—remains an exceptionally compelling proposition that unites supreme brand cachet with genuine day-to-day usability.
