Model Overview

The McLaren W1 is the flagship hypercar from British supercar maker McLaren, serving as the direct successor to the legendary McLaren P1 and the latest addition to the marque's definitive "1" car line—a lineage tracing back to the iconic McLaren F1 launched in 1992. The W1 made its official global debut on 6 October 2024, timed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emerson Fittipaldi clinching McLaren's first F1 Drivers' and Constructors' World Championship titles. Production is strictly limited to just 399 units worldwide, with UK pricing starting at approximately £2 million (equivalent to around RM18,400,000 to RM18,500,000). The entire production run was fully allocated at launch, with customer deliveries scheduled to commence in 2025.
Design Language
The exterior styling of the W1 marries Formula 1-derived aerodynamic solutions with extensive lightweight composite engineering. The front fascia is broad and low-slung, headlined by ultra-slim LED headlamps, under which sit dual-motor-driven active front aero flaps that sweep in an arc to create a full-width through-body air channel. Along the flanks are signature Anhedral gullwing doors, incorporating large sculpted triangular ducts to channel cooling air directly into the radiators. At the rear, an innovative Active Long Tail rear wing driven by four electric actuators can extend rearward by up to 300 mm. Dimension-wise, the hypercar measures 4,635 mm long, 2,191 mm wide, and 1,182 mm tall (inclusive of antenna), riding on a 2,680 mm wheelbase. Inside, the cabin is distinctly driver-centric, equipped with a fully digital instrument binnacle and a portrait-oriented 8-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay integration. The seats are fixed racing buckets integrated into the tub, with driving position adjustments accommodated via a movable steering wheel and pedal box assembly.
Power and Performance
Propulsion comes from a high-performance hybrid powertrain combining a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an advanced electric drive module. The newly developed MHP-8 4.0-litre V8 engine features a 90-degree flat-plane crankshaft and plasma spray-coated cylinder bores, revving to an extraordinary 9,200 rpm and producing 928 hp on its own. The electric drive unit houses a motorsport-spec radial flux motor and integrated controller, supplying an additional 347 hp. Together, the system unleashes a colossal combined output of 1,275 hp and 1,340 Nm of torque, delivered through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with an electronic reverse gear. In terms of performance, the century sprint from 0-100 km/h is accomplished in a blistering 2.7 seconds, 0-200 km/h takes just 5.8 seconds, and 0-300 km/h is dispatched in under 12.7 seconds, on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 350 km/h. A 1.384 kWh battery pack provides an all-electric driving range of around 2 km. With a dry kerb weight of just 1,399 kg, the hypercar achieves an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of 911 hp/tonne.
Chassis and Handling
The chassis underpins the W1's extreme dynamic capabilities, built around the all-new bespoke Aerocell carbon-fibre monocoque. The front suspension adopts a motorsport-derived pushrod setup—making it the first road-legal McLaren to feature this configuration—paired with a conventional double-wishbone architecture at the rear. The suspension assembly incorporates lightweight titanium front uprights and 3D-printed wishbones. The chassis is governed by the RaceActive Chassis Control III (RCC III) suspension system alongside McLaren's benchmark electro-hydraulic power steering. In Race mode, ride height drops by 37 mm at the front and 18 mm at the rear, working in tandem with the active aero elements to develop up to 1,000 kg of downforce in high-speed corners. Stopping power is managed by forged monobloc calipers (6-piston front, 4-piston rear) clamping carbon-ceramic brake discs, bringing the car from 100-0 km/h to a dead stop in just 29 metres.
Cabin and Features
The W1 features a dedicated two-seater cockpit, trimmed extensively in exposed carbon fibre to keep weight to an absolute minimum. The 8-inch central infotainment display supports Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring and includes dedicated USB-A and USB-C ports. Extensive McLaren Special Operations (MSO) personalisation options are on offer, including McLaren's innovative InnoKnit woven lightweight upholstery. Practicality has also been considered with a luggage shelf behind the seats and forward-folding headrests, providing up to 117 litres of storage capacity.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the ultra-rigid Aerocell carbon-fibre monocoque provides exceptional structural integrity and occupant survival cell protection even during high-energy impacts. The car is equipped with McLaren Race Mode, with the active Long Tail rear wing functioning seamlessly as both a DRS low-drag device and an aerodynamic airbrake. Front and rear parking sensors and a reverse camera are included as standard equipment.
Market Performance and Reception
The W1 was met with immense global demand, with all 399 build slots completely snapped up immediately upon its unveiling. According to official factory data, the W1 laps the Nardo handling circuit a full 3 seconds faster than the track-honed Senna, and beats the Speedtail to 300 km/h in straight-line acceleration. McLaren has officially designated the W1 as its "most powerful road car ever" and the "fastest-accelerating road-legal car in history". Standing as the third chapter in the prestigious "1" line, the W1 carries forward the technological tour de force legacy established by the F1 and P1. A decade after the "Holy Trinity" hypercar era, the W1 is the first of the breed to take up the mantle from the P1, redefining the modern hypercar benchmark through plug-in hybrid V8 power, relentless lightweight construction, and authentic Formula 1 technology transfer.
