McLaren 765LT

2026-10-10 23:40:00

The McLaren 765LT is a supercar unveiled in March 2020 by British marque McLaren Automotive. Based on the core Super Series 720S, it represents the third road-legal model in McLaren's "LT (Longtail)" lineage. With extreme lightweight engineering, aggressive aerodynamics, and a potent powertrain, the model stands as the performance flagship of the McLaren Super Series range.

Vehicle Overview

Positioned as a track-focused supercar, the 765LT is the latest masterpiece from McLaren's "Longtail" stable. The "LT" moniker pays homage to the legendary McLaren F1 GTR Longtail that dominated GT endurance racing in 1997, symbolising a heritage of extreme weight reduction and pure track performance. Developed from the range-topping Super Series 720S, global production is strictly limited to 765 units. Its entire 2020 production allocation was snapped up shortly after launch. In 2021, McLaren expanded the lineup with the 765LT Spider convertible, likewise capped at 765 units worldwide.

Design Language

Aesthetically, the 765LT retains the core silhouette of the 720S while receiving comprehensive aerodynamic enhancements. The extended front splitter beneath the bumper is wider and incorporates vertical aero blades at both ends to optimise aerodynamic efficiency. Additional airflow-channelling blades have also been integrated along the lower door sections.

The rear end represents the most distinctive hallmark of the 765LT. The newly designed active rear wing features a 20% larger surface area and sits 60 mm higher in its resting position compared to the 720S. The exhaust layout has been upgraded from twin outlets to a centrally mounted quad-exit setup crafted from titanium, delivering a 40% weight saving. The restyled rear bumper incorporates supplementary cooling grilles in the lower apron alongside an enlarged rear diffuser. Additionally, the 765LT rides 5 mm lower at the front, has a 6 mm wider front track, extends forward by 48 mm at the nose, and lengthens by 9 mm at the tail, increasing overall vehicle length by 57 mm—embodying the pure "Longtail" philosophy.

Inside, the 765LT carries forward the motorsport-inspired theme synonymous with the LT series. The cabin is extensively trimmed in Alcantara upholstery, complemented by lightweight carbon fibre trim inserts. Full carbon fibre lightweight bucket seats are fitted as standard, shedding 9 kg per seat. Steering column adjustment is manual, and non-essential items such as cabin carpeting have been deleted to save weight.

Powertrain and Performance

The 765LT is powered by the M840T 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine shared with the 720S. With bespoke powertrain calibration, maximum output is raised to 765 PS (563 kW), a 45 PS increase over the 720S, with peak torque arriving at 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).

Power is channelled through a 7-speed SSG dual-clutch transmission, delivering 15% quicker in-gear acceleration than the 720S. The gearbox introduces a "limit downshift" function that prevents engine over-revving during aggressive downshifts. On the performance front, 0-100 km/h is accomplished in just 2.8 seconds; 0-200 km/h takes 7.0-7.2 seconds; the standing quarter-mile (approx. 402 metres) is completed in 9.9 seconds; and top speed is rated at 330 km/h.

Chassis and Handling

The 765LT features comprehensive chassis stiffening and weight-reduction measures over the 720S. Built around McLaren's signature Monocage II carbon fibre monocoque, the suspension has been re-engineered to significantly reduce unsprung mass. It features front and rear double-wishbone independent suspension coupled with Proactive Chassis Control II (PCC II) and McLaren's renowned electro-hydraulic power steering.

Braking hardware is sourced directly from the McLaren Senna, featuring carbon ceramic discs and calipers. Extensive lightweight engineering—including a carbon fibre floor, front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and active rear wing (14.3 kg reduction), forged alloy wheels (22 kg reduction), carbon fibre racing seats (18 kg reduction), lightweight side glass and polycarbonate engine cover (6 kg reduction), and a titanium exhaust (3.8 kg reduction)—brings the minimum dry weight of the 765LT down to just 1,229 kg, an 80 kg weight reduction over the 720S. McLaren also offers the air conditioning unit (10 kg) and audio system (1.5 kg) as no-cost options, allowing buyers to specify them to preference.

Cabin and Equipment

The cabin of the 765LT is focused around a minimalist, track-focused layout. Full carbon fibre lightweight bucket seats come standard, wrapped in Alcantara to deliver both weight savings and exceptional lateral support. By default, air conditioning and infotainment systems are omitted, though McLaren can refit them at no extra charge upon customer request. The Spider variant comes equipped with an ultra-lightweight one-piece Retractable Hard Top (RHT) that opens or closes in 11 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the 765LT is equipped with structural and active protection systems commensurate with its supercar pedigree. The carbon fibre Monocage II tub provides exceptional structural rigidity and occupant crash protection. Active safety features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard. The Senna-derived carbon ceramic braking system can also be upgraded with an optional track brake package featuring 60% higher disc strength and four times greater thermal conductivity.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its debut in March 2020, the 765LT has generated strong demand across the global supercar segment. In Europe, the starting price was RM335,000; the US market retailed from around RM358,000; and order pricing in Taiwan, China stood at approximately RM23,680,000. In mainland China, where official allocation was unavailable, parallel import pricing soared to between RM5,000,000 and RM7,000,000.

The entire 2020 production allocation was completely sold out within the launch year, with the 765LT Spider convertible experiencing similarly rapid take-up. As the modern torchbearer of McLaren's iconic "Longtail" bloodline, the 765LT has cemented its supercar legacy with its devastating 765 PS output, uncompromising 1,229 kg lightweight build, and pure track-honed dynamics.
