McLaren 570S

2026-10-11 01:10:00

The McLaren 570S is a mid-engine supercar introduced in 2015 by British marque McLaren, serving as the inaugural model in the McLaren Sports Series. Making its global debut at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, the model was slotted between the 540C and 650S, playing a pivotal strategic role in expanding McLaren's reach to a wider audience of driving enthusiasts.

Model Overview

Positioned as an entry-level supercar, the 570S is the hero model of the Sports Series—one of McLaren's three core product tiers. Its nomenclature is straightforward: "570" denotes the engine's maximum power output of 570 PS (570 hp), while "S" stands for Sport. The car was offered in two body styles: a fixed-roof Coupe and an open-top Spider; the convertible variant features a three-piece retractable hardtop mechanism that opens or closes in just 15 seconds. Original price tags ranged from RM2,436,000 to RM2,708,000, with an entry price of RM2,556,000 when launched in 2015. Key rivals include high-end sports cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi R8, and Mercedes-AMG GT. Production ceased in 2020, and the model is now primarily traded on the pre-owned market.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the 570S carries McLaren's unmistakable family design DNA. The front fascia shares design cues with the 650S, featuring boomerang-shaped LED headlights and integrated aerodynamic air ducts. Dimensions measure 4,530 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,202 mm in height, with a 2,670 mm wheelbase. The signature carbon-fibre dihedral doors stand out as McLaren’s most iconic design hallmark. Prominent aero blades run along the flanks from the rear quarter panels to the front wings, injecting a purposeful, dynamic stance into the profile. The open-top version (570S Spider) features a three-piece folding hardtop that operates in 15 seconds.

Inside, the 570S adopts a floating centre console layout, complete with a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a 7-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and circular air conditioning vents. The entire dashboard and console are trimmed in premium leather, offering significantly more cabin storage than earlier McLaren offerings. While maintaining a focused, driver-centric environment, the cockpit delivers marked improvements in overall luxury and everyday usability.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the skin, the 570S is powered by McLaren's M838TE 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Derived from the 650S's M838T power unit, it features 30% redesigned components along with a bespoke engine tune. It churns out 419 kW (570 PS) at 7,400–7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 600 Nm at 5,000–6,500 rpm, revving all the way to an 8,500 rpm redline. Power is delivered through a 7-speed SSG seamless-shift dual-clutch transmission.

In terms of performance, the 570S Coupe sprints from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 3.2 seconds, reaches 0-200 km/h in 9.5–9.6 seconds, and tops out at 328 km/h. The Spider completes the 0-60 mph dash in 3.1 seconds. The car features a 42.5:57.5 front-to-rear weight distribution, while NEDC combined fuel consumption is rated at 10.7 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The 570S is built around McLaren's bespoke MonoCell II carbon-fibre monocoque. This engineering approach traces its lineage to the pioneering 1981 McLaren MP4/1—the world's first carbon-fibre Formula 1 car—representing the brand's core motorsport heritage. The suspension setup employs front and rear aluminium double wishbones paired with adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars. Unlike the 720S with its active hydraulic suspension, the 570S relies on conventional steel coil springs, delivering an exceptionally crisp and communicative chassis feel.

Power is routed via a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Carbon-ceramic brakes come as standard, bringing the car from 100-0 km/h to a halt in just 30.5 metres. Staggered tyre setups measure 225/35 R19 at the front and 285/35 R20 at the rear, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber. The supercar also features McLaren's Brake Steer technology, which subtly brakes the inside rear wheel during cornering to sharpen turn-in agility.

The dynamic setup in the 570S is split into independent Handling and Powertrain switches, each offering three selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Track. This allows drivers to tailor steering response, damper firmness, and powertrain aggression to their exact preferences.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the 570S is equipped with a portrait-oriented 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit supporting satellite navigation, Bluetooth hands-free/audio streaming, and USB connectivity. An 8-speaker audio system comes standard, with an optional 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system on offer. In the Spider, the digital instrument cluster can also display practical telematics such as tyre temperatures and estimated battery health.

On the comfort front, manual seat adjustments and a manual steering column come standard, with various carbon-fibre interior trim packages available as options. For drivers seeking greater touring practicality, the 570GT variant was introduced with enhanced luggage capacity and improved long-distance ride comfort.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of passive safety, the 570S is equipped with dual front airbags and dual front side airbags. Active safety systems include standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) , Electronic Stability Control (ESC) , Traction Control System (TCS) , Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA).

Driver assistance amenities feature Hill Start Assist, a hydraulic front-axle Nose Lift system, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera. Other conveniences include audible parking aids, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and anti-pinch power windows.

Market Performance and Reception

As the pioneer of the McLaren Sports Series, the 570S carved out a unique niche in the global supercar landscape with its relatively accessible entry point and unadulterated driving thrills. The 2019 model year variant went on sale in April 2021, certified to China VI emission standards. In 2022, McLaren unveiled the limited-run 570S M2B Edition in tribute to founder Bruce McLaren.

From the perspective of motoring media and owners alike, the sublime feedback delivered by the carbon-fibre MonoCell II tub earned widespread acclaim for establishing an intimate connection between driver and tarmac. The steering is telepathic and rich in feel, thanks to McLaren's steadfast commitment to electro-hydraulic power steering over full-electric setups, outshining most of its contemporaries. The chassis composure is frequently lauded for feeling incredibly rigid, taut, and planted. On the flip side, criticisms have centred on steeper depreciation rates, a dated infotainment interface, and occasional minor electrical niggles.

Production of the 570S officially wrapped up in 2020, with its slot in the showroom floor taken over by the more grand-touring-oriented McLaren GT. Its true spiritual successor, however, arrived in 2022 in the form of the Artura—a next-generation plug-in hybrid supercar powered by a twin-turbo V6. Across its five-year tenure from 2015 to 2020, the McLaren 570S cemented its legacy in the supercar segment through its ultra-rigid carbon monocoque, classic mid-rear layout, and delightfully communicative driving dynamics.
