Mazda CX-80

2026-10-10 15:00:01

The Mazda CX-80 is the second model built on Mazda's Large Product Group platform, having made its global debut in April 2024. Positioned as a mid-to-large three-row SUV, it serves as a key strategic model spearheading the Mazda brand's push into the premium luxury segment. The CX-80 is primarily tailored for the European, Japanese, and Asian markets, creating a differentiated product line-up alongside the North America-focused CX-70 and CX-90. As of June 2026, the CX-80 has not been introduced for local assembly or production by Changan Mazda.

Model Overview

Positioned as a mid-to-large luxury SUV between the CX-60 and CX-90, the CX-80 serves as the direct successor to the CX-8. Its headline selling points centre on its longitudinal rear-wheel-drive platform, three-row seating layout, and signature "Jinba-Ittai" driving dynamics. In terms of dimensions, the CX-80 measures 4,995 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, with a 3,120 mm wheelbase. Compared to the CX-60, its wheelbase and overall length have both been stretched by 250 mm; it is also 65 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the outgoing CX-8. In Japan, the CX-80 is priced between 3,943,500 and 7,144,500 yen (approx. RM183,000 to RM331,000); in the European market, starting prices are around £48,900 (approx. RM440,000); whilst in Australia, prices start from around AUD 55,000 (approx. RM260,000).

Design Language

The CX-80 embodies Mazda's "Kodo: Soul of Motion" design philosophy, developed under the theme of "Graceful Toughness". Its long bonnet and short front overhang proportions highlight the bespoke DNA of a longitudinal engine platform, crafting a commanding rear-wheel-drive visual stance. Up front, it sports a large polygonal front grille filled with black mesh, bordered by thick chrome garnishes that flow into slim LED daytime running lights, framing the compact headlamp clusters. The side profile remains clean and uncluttered, with the chrome trim along the D-pillar subtly accentuated in thickness and contour to highlight the three-row cabin architecture. The rear is dominated by horizontally extended L-shaped tail lamps paired with a concealed exhaust layout. The vehicle is offered in nine exterior colours, including the newly developed "Melting Copper", which achieves a rich metallic lustre through a specialised high-temperature baking process.

Inside, the CX-80 mirrors the premium dashboard architecture of the CX-60. The dashboard adopts an asymmetrical layout with a strong horizontal emphasis on the upper section, whilst the lower console integrates layered chrome accents and genuine wood trims for an upscale tactile feel. The cabin lighting system places LED illumination across the centre console, door panels, footwells, and boot compartment, with customisable ambient lighting available in select areas.

Powertrain and Performance

The CX-80 offers a choice of electrified powertrains. On the internal combustion front, it features a 3.3-litre inline-six e-Skyactiv D turbodiesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering 254 PS (187 kW) and 550 Nm of torque. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.4 seconds en route to a top speed of 219 km/h. A lower-output diesel variant delivering 231 PS and 500 Nm is also available in select markets.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant combines a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, generating a total system output of 323 to 328 PS (approx. 241 kW) and 500 Nm of torque. Fed by a 17.8 kWh high-voltage battery pack, it delivers a WLTC pure electric driving range of 60 to 67 km. The PHEV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 195 km/h. All variants are mated to a Skyactiv-Drive 8-speed automatic transmission. In terms of efficiency, the PHEV model delivers a combined fuel consumption figure as low as 1.6 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by Mazda’s SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, the CX-80 utilizes a longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel-drive-based all-wheel drive (AWD) layout. The suspension setup comprises a front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent configuration. 20-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard across the range. This longitudinal RWD platform endows the CX-80 with exceptional high-speed stability and balanced front-to-rear weight distribution.

Cabin and Features

The CX-80 cockpit is equipped with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, complemented by a large head-up display (HUD) for clear, segregated information delivery. The central touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. A 1,021 mm panoramic glass sunroof is optionally available, paired with reinforced B-pillar structures to mitigate roof deformation risks. For in-car audio, customers can choose between the standard Mazda Harmonic Acoustics system and an optional 12-speaker Bose premium audio setup.

Seating configurations include a 6-seater (2+2+2) or 7-seater (2+3+2) layout. The 6-seater variant features second-row captain seats with walk-through aisle access, along with an optional fixed centre console. The second row offers up to 120 mm of sliding range and a recline angle between 15° and 33°. The third-row seats are designed to comfortably accommodate occupants up to 1,700 mm in height. Dedicated air-conditioning vents are provided for both the second and third rows, with the third row gaining USB-C charging ports and storage cubbies. Boot capacity stands at 258 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 1,221 litres with the third row folded down, and up to 1,971 litres with both rear rows folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The CX-80 comes comprehensively equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. Highlights include the second-generation Driver Personalisation System, which utilizes facial recognition to automatically adjust seating and driving preferences, supporting up to six saved profiles. Safety hardware includes a 360-degree surround-view monitor with a See-Through View function and a dedicated trailer hitch view to assist with towing duties. The 2026 model year further incorporates Driver Emergency Assist (DEA) and built-in Amazon Alexa voice support. Active safety systems fitted as standard across the range include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). The high-voltage battery pack is backed by an 8-year / 160,000 km warranty.

Market Performance and Reception

As the second offering from Mazda’s Large Product Group, the CX-80 carries the strategic mission of elevating the brand into the premium luxury market. Following its global debut in April 2024, the model went on sale in Japan in October that year, with European deliveries commencing in February 2026. In the Malaysian market, the CX-80 is introduced as a fully imported (CBU) model from Japan, offered exclusively in the PHEV variant. In the Chinese market, local production has not been initiated, as Mazda has redirected its strategic focus towards local new energy vehicle (NEV) development.

The CX-80 stands as the largest SUV sold by Mazda in the European market. Amid the sweeping shift towards electrification, Mazda's dedication to a longitudinal rear-drive layout and inline-six powerplants provides the CX-80 with a unique engineering identity in the mid-to-large three-row SUV segment. Through the optimised packaging of its extended wheelbase and multi-row interior, the CX-80 successfully fills the three-row vacancy in Mazda’s mainstream European SUV lineup.
