Maserati GranCabrio Folgore

2026-10-09 09:20:00

Model Overview

The Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is a flagship fully electric two-door, four-seater soft-top luxury GT convertible from Italian luxury marque Maserati, and stands as the world's first 100% fully electric two-door GT convertible coupe. "Folgore", which translates to "lightning" in Italian, serves as Maserati's dedicated all-electric sub-brand. The lineage of the GranCabrio nameplate traces back to 2007, with the second-generation iteration debuting in 2024. On 18 June 2026, Maserati officially unveiled the facelifted GranCabrio.

As of June 2026, order books for the GranCabrio Folgore have progressively opened across global markets. Pricing starts from RM980,000 in the US, approximately RM1,080,000 in the UK, and a recommended retail price of RM1,420,000 in Taiwan. Official pricing for mainland China has yet to be announced, with showroom units expected to arrive progressively in the second half of 2026. The new model is manufactured at Maserati's historic Viale Ciro Menotti facility in Modena, Italy.

Design Language

Aesthetically, the 2026 GranCabrio Folgore introduces Maserati's most cohesive design overhaul in recent memory, adopting the aggressive "Shark Nose" front fascia derived directly from the track-focused MCPura flagship. The front bumper gains sharper, more angular profiling, distinctly differentiating the EV variant from its petrol-powered sibling. While the headlamp and tail lamp clusters retain their overall graphics, the rear units feature a subtler smoked finish. The alloy wheel designs have been updated, complemented by a 10 mm wider track. Seven fresh exterior paint shades have been introduced—including Matte Green Jupiter and Blu Denim —drawing inspiration from the Italian landscape. The fabric soft top is available in five colourways.

Inside, the cabin receives a series of refined enhancements: an octagonal-profile steering wheel; a reshaped octagonal digital clock atop the dashboard; and the replacement of the push-button drive mode selector with a tactile toggle switch for effortless operation on the move. The cockpit is anchored by a triple-screen layout—comprising a 12.2-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and an 8.8-inch auxiliary climate and vehicle control display, all featuring revamped UI graphics. Emphasising sustainable Italian craftsmanship, the interior makes extensive use of Econyl regenerated nylon, repurposed from recycled fishing nets and carpeting.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the skin, the GranCabrio Folgore is driven by a tri-motor setup utilizing permanent magnet synchronous motors (one on the front axle, two at the rear), forming an advanced electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The powertrain serves up a combined maximum output of 761 PS (760 CV)  and an immense 1,350 Nm of peak torque. The 0-100 km/h sprint is dispatched in just 2.8 seconds, en route to a top speed of 290 km/h. For perspective, the GranTurismo Folgore coupe achieves the 0-100 km/h benchmark in 2.7 seconds and tops out at 325 km/h.

Energy is supplied by a 92.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack arranged in a "T-bone" layout along the central transmission tunnel to preserve a low centre of gravity and ideal weight distribution. Built on an advanced 800V electrical architecture, the grand tourer features an AWD Disconnect system that mechanically decouples the front motor during cruising to minimise drivetrain drag. Combined with revised energy management algorithms and refined aero efficiency, the 2026 GranCabrio Folgore's WLTP-rated range jumps from roughly 419 km to 509 km—a solid 90 km increase. The EPA-estimated range stands at roughly 233 miles. For rapid top-ups, it supports DC fast charging at up to 270 kW.

Chassis & Handling

Underpinning the GranCabrio Folgore is a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent suspension setup. Height-adjustable adaptive air suspension comes standard across the range. For the 2026 model year, a newly added "Country" mode raises the ride height by 20 mm at speeds up to 120 km/h. Efficiency is further bolstered by a dedicated "Max Range" mode, while engaging the "Performance Optimizer"  within "Corsa Mode"  unlocks up to 10% extra punch through dynamic tri-motor torque vectoring. The car rides on staggered 265/35 ZR20 front and 295/30 ZR21 rear tyres, with a kerb weight rated at around 2,260 kg.

Cabin & Practicality

The GranCabrio Folgore adopts a classic 2+2 seating layout, though the rear quarters remain snug and are best suited for light luggage or occasional short journeys. Ensuring top-down comfort across various climates, integrated neck warmers are fitted as standard to keep occupants comfortable on open-air drives. Boot space is modest when the roof is stowed. In-car entertainment is handled by a bespoke 16-speaker Sonus Faber premium audio system. Buyers can also tap into Maserati's extensive Fuoriserie personalisation programme for bespoke exterior liveries, interior trims, and exclusive upholstery materials.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS)

Safety is bolstered for 2026 with the standard fitment of a Driver Drowsiness Detection system across the board. The comprehensive ADAS suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Blind Spot Assist (BSM), Rear Cross Path Detection, Intersection Collision Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. Passive safety is comprehensively covered by a full complement of airbags.

Market Positioning & Verdict

The GranCabrio Folgore occupies an exclusive niche in the ultra-luxury EV landscape as the world's first and only fully electric four-seater convertible grand tourer. Its primary petrol-powered rivals include stalwarts such as the Porsche 911 Cabriolet and the Mercedes-AMG SL.

In global media reviews, Car and Driver awarded the car an 8.5/10 overall rating, praising its "stunning styling, sumptuous cabin, and face-melting acceleration". Parkers echoed this sentiment, lauding its "gorgeous exterior and interior design, stonking performance, comfortable and remarkably refined" grand touring dynamics. However, critics noted trade-offs such as "range that falls slightly short for a continent-crossing GT", a "compact boot", and the fact that "the V6 Nettuno petrol variant costs significantly less while delivering a much more emotive exhaust note".

Official pricing for the GranCabrio Folgore in China has yet to be finalised; for context, the GranTurismo Folgore is tagged at around RM1,988,000 locally. Order books for both Folgore models are now open in Europe, with initial customer deliveries commencing in September 2026, and local showroom arrivals slated for the latter half of 2026. The launch comes at a pivotal juncture for Maserati, following a challenging 2025 where global deliveries contracted 30% year-on-year to 7,900 units—its lowest since 2012. Against this backdrop, the GranCabrio Folgore spearheads the Trident marque's bold pivot to electrification, blending 761 PS of tri-motor firepower, 2.8-second 0-100 km/h acceleration, and an upgraded 509 km range into a distinctly Italian high-performance grand tourer.
