Mandatory / Instructional Signs

2026-10-21 11:20:00

Mandatory and instructional road signs are statutory traffic signs installed along roads or at junctions according to national standards, directing vehicles and pedestrians to proceed in specified directions, locations, lanes, or manners. Serving as positive behavioural guides within the traffic signage system detailing "how road users should proceed", they play an indispensable role in smoothing traffic flow, delineating lane rights-of-way, and mitigating collision risks.

Core Attributes and Legal Standing

Mandatory Positive Compliance: Unlike prohibitory signs that restrict or forbid specific actions, mandatory signs positively assign rights of way and dictate travel paths. Drivers and pedestrians must strictly adhere to the designated direction, lane, or rule indicated, and are strictly prohibited from deviating off-course or encroaching into dedicated lanes.

Classic Blue-and-White Visual Coding: Typically featuring a blue background with white symbols (or white lettering) in circular, rectangular, or square formats, these signs offer high visual contrast. This allows motorists to swiftly identify legal routes even at highway speeds and amid heavy traffic.

Core Categories and Common Applications

Mandatory signs encompass multi-faceted driving directives, covering directional flow, lane designations, dedicated lanes for specific vehicle types, and minimum speed limits:

Module 1: Directional and Trajectory Instructions

Content:

Directional Instructions: Signs such as proceed straight, turn left, turn right, or combined straight-and-turn arrows require vehicles entering that junction or lane to strictly and exclusively follow the indicated arrow direction.

Keep-Side and Roundabout Instructions: Signs such as keep left, keep right, and roundabout ahead guide motorists around road obstacles or instruct them to enter roundabouts in an anti-clockwise direction.

Flyover and U-Turn Instructions: Indicating elevated flyover routes or designated zones where U-turns are permitted.

Module 2: Lane Allocation, Vehicle Exclusivity, and Minimum Speed Limits

Content:

Dedicated Lane Signs: Designations for motor vehicles, non-motorised transport, dedicated bus lanes, and High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes clearly establish exclusive statutory right-of-way for specific road users.

Pedestrian Crossing and Escape Ramp Instructions: Blue square signs with a white triangle and a pedestrian symbol indicate a designated pedestrian crossing ahead; escape ramp signs guide out-of-control vehicles safely into emergency run-off areas.

Minimum Speed Limit Signs: Circular signs featuring a blue background, white numerals, and a yellow arc at the bottom designate the minimum permissible driving speed on that road section (typically on expressways or highways), preventing severe rear-end crashes caused by overly slow-moving vehicles.

Safe Driving Protocols and Risk Prevention

When travelling through road sections or junctions governed by mandatory signs, drivers should adopt systematic visual anticipation and vehicle control habits:

Protocol 1: Early Observation and Lane Positioning

Long-Range Scanning and Lane Selection:

When approaching junctions or elevated highway splits, drivers should check overhead gantries and roadside signs well in advance to select the correct lane for their destination. All lane changes must be executed before reaching the solid white line of the directional lane; cutting across solid lines is strictly prohibited.

Strict Adherence to Lane Directives:

Once committed to a lane with mandatory markings (such as a "left-turn only" lane), even if you have entered by mistake, you must follow the lane's designated direction and turn left, subsequently making a U-turn or finding an alternate route ahead safely. Forcing your way straight from a turn-only lane is strictly prohibited.

Protocol 2: Cautionary Habits for Special Mandatory Signs

Vigilance at Pedestrian Crossings:

Upon spotting a pedestrian crossing sign, even in the absence of traffic lights, drivers should ease off the throttle and cover the brake pedal, staying fully prepared to yield to pedestrians stepping onto the zebra crossing from blind spots.

Dynamic Compliance with Minimum Speed Limits:

When encountering minimum speed limit signs on expressways (e.g. minimum speed of 60 km/h or 100 km/h), drivers must not travel below the prescribed limit under clear road and free-flowing conditions. If a vehicle breakdown prevents maintaining the minimum speed, turn on the hazard lights immediately, move to the emergency lane, or exit the expressway at the nearest junction.
